Chapter 3 - An Unexpected Visitor

The sharp chime of the doorbell rang out again, a jarring intrusion that caused little Chloe to flinch and bury her tear-streaked face deeper into the fabric of Marcus’s suit jacket. Maya’s head snapped toward the front hallway, a brief flash of pure panic crossing her otherwise composed features before she quickly masked it with a cool, practiced expression.

"Are we expecting someone?" Marcus asked, his eyes locked on his wife, refusing to let her dodge the tension hanging heavily in the room.

"No," Maya answered tightly, smoothing down the front of her navy dress with deliberate slowness. "No one is supposed to be here."

Marcus didn't move. He stood holding the tablet in one hand, his phone securely pocketed with the newly downloaded logs, while his daughter whimpered against his thigh. Leo sat silently at the table, his eyes fixed on his half-eaten dinner as if trying to make himself completely invisible. The bell chimed a third time, more insistent now, accompanied by the distinct sound of a fist rapping firmly against the solid oak of the front door.

"Marcus. Answer it," Maya commanded in a low, sharp hiss, her jaw tight. "Don't just stand there."

Slowly, carefully, Marcus unwrapped Chloe’s small arms from his leg, kneeling down to look directly into her wide, fearful eyes.

"Stay right here with your brother, sweetie," Marcus whispered gently, forcing a calm tone he didn't feel. "Daddy will be right back."

He stood up, walking with measured steps out of the dining room and down the dimly lit hallway toward the entryway. The ambient light from the living room cast long, distorted shadows across the hardwood floors. Reaching the front door, Marcus peered through the small security peephole. Standing on the porch was an older woman with sharp features and a tailored grey coat, holding a heavy leather portfolio against her chest. It was Elena, Maya’s estranged mother, whom Marcus hadn’t seen in over two years.

Marcus unlocked the deadbolt with a metallic click and pulled the heavy door open. Elena stood there, her expression grave and unsmiling, her eyes instantly locking onto his with a look of profound, chilling urgency.

"Marcus," Elena said without any preamble, stepping past him into the foyer without waiting for an invitation. "Thank God you're home. I couldn't reach you by phone, and I knew she wouldn't let me inside if she knew I was coming."

Marcus closed the door slowly behind his mother-in-law, his heart hammering against his ribs.

"Elena, what is this about?" Marcus asked, blocking her path toward the dining room. "What are you doing here?"

May you like

Elena looked up at him, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "I’m here because of the children, Marcus. You have no idea what Maya has been doing behind your back, and you need to get them out of this house tonight."
