Chapter 1 - The First Crack

Marcus stood frozen in the doorway of the dining room, his chest tightening as the heavy wool of his suit jacket pulled taut. Maya’s sharp voice cut through the tense air of the suburban evening, leaving no room for argument. Her long dark hair framed a face hardened by an unyielding frustration that Marcus had rarely witnessed before.

Beside Maya, little Chloe clung desperately to the fabric of Marcus’s suit, her tear-stained cheeks reddening as soft, heartbroken sobs shook her small frame. Maya pointed an accusing finger toward the weeping toddler, her eyes flashing with a cold intensity.

"She stole food after I told her no," Maya said angrily, her tone dripping with exasperation.

Marcus turned his head slowly, his mind struggling to process the accusation against the toddler. He looked over at the dining table where their older son, Leo, sat quietly.

"Why doesn't she have dinner?" Marcus asked, his voice laced with shock and confusion.

Leo looked up from his plate, a fork halfway to his mouth, his young face wearing an expression of quiet resignation.

"She does this when you're at work," Leo said softly.

Chloe buried her face deeper into Marcus’s side, her small fists clenching the cloth of his jacket tighter.

"She locks the food away from me!" the little girl sobbed, the words tumbling out through a fresh wave of tears.

Marcus felt a cold knot form in his stomach as he stared down at his daughter. He stepped forward, breaking the heavy stillness of the room, and walked directly toward the polished mahogany dining table. Lying flat on the surface next to Leo’s empty plate was a modern digital tablet, its bright screen glowing with an unfamiliar interface. Maya stood stiffly beside him, her breathing shallow as she watched his every move with a guarded look in her eyes.

Marcus reached out his hand, his fingers curling around the sleek edges of the device.

"Give me that," Marcus said firmly, his eyes locking onto Maya's as the screen suddenly flickered, revealing a hidden security log that made his blood run cold.
