Chapter 3 - The Heavy Knock

The sound of the knuckles striking the front door echoed through the quiet house like a gunshot. Arthur froze, his hand still hovering inches from Helen’s shoulder. Lily didn't jump at the noise; she merely pulled her schoolbag a fraction of an inch closer to her chest, her breathing remaining unnaturally shallow and steady.
"That'll be them," Helen said, her voice dropping to a flat, pragmatic whisper. She didn't look panicked. Instead, she adjusted the cuffs of her beige sweater with chilling composure, smoothing the knit fabric over her wrists. "Remember your story, Arthur. We are a traditional family utilizing early domestic training for developmental discipline. If you crack, you’ll lose her. Do you understand me?"
"I am not lying to state investigators, Helen," Arthur hissed back, his voice tight with rising fury. He backed away from her, his chest heaving. "This ends right now. You’re sick. Both of us are going to sit down with whoever is on the other side of that door, and we are going to tell the absolute truth."
The knocking came again, louder this time, accompanied by a firm, authoritative voice from the porch. "Child Protective Services. Open the door, please."
Helen didn't move toward the entryway. She stood her ground beside the dining table, her dark eyes locking onto Arthur’s with an intensity that made his breath hitch. "If you open that door and start babbling your delusions, I will ensure that the court sees every single late-night financial report you’ve doctored to keep your job. I know about the accounts, Arthur. I know everything."
Arthur’s blood ran cold. The words hung in the air, heavy and poisonous. He stared at his wife, realizing the depths of the trap she had constructed around him. It wasn't just Lily; he was a prisoner in this house too, bound by secrets he thought he had buried deep.
Without waiting for his response, Helen turned her back on him, walked smoothly past the dining table, and laid a gentle, possessive hand on Lily’s shoulder. The little girl flinched ever so slightly at the touch, a microscopic micro-expression of dread flashing across her innocent face before she masked it with deadpan obedience.
Arthur stood paralyzed for a heartbeat. The third knock rattled the frame. With trembling legs, he turned away from his family and walked down the short hallway toward the front door, his mind racing through the ruins of his life.
He reached out, his fingers wrapping around the cool brass handle, and pulled the door open.
Standing on the porch was a tall woman in a sharp charcoal-gray trench coat, her identification badge held out at eye level before she even introduced herself.

"Mr. Arthur Carter?" she asked, her voice sharp and professional. "I’m Investigator Sarah Vance. We need to talk about your daughter."
