Chapter 10 - The Subterranean Nursery

The flashlight beam cut through the thick, dust-laden air of the hidden subterranean chamber, illuminating a space that defied all human decency. It wasn't a crawlspace for plumbing. It was a fully furnished, subterranean nursery, complete with cribs, small wooden desks, and walls lined with strict, color-coded behavioral charts written in Helen’s immaculate, spidery cursive.
Sitting in the center of the dirt-floored room, huddled beneath a moth-eaten woolen blanket, were three small children. They blinked owlishly against the sudden glare of the flashlight, shielding their eyes with thin, malnourished arms.
"Mommy said we have to stay quiet," a little boy of about three years old whispered into the gloom, his voice raspy and cracked from dehydration. "We didn't finish washing the socks."
Arthur stared down into the abyss, his mind shattering completely. The illusion of his life was gone, replaced by a grotesque theater of cruelty orchestrated by the woman he had shared a bed with for six years. Helen hadn't just abducted Lily; she had been running a subterranean facility right beneath their feet, cycling through children like disposable inventory, using them as domestic laborers and emotional props.
"Paramedics! We need medical extraction down here now!" Investigator Vance’s voice echoed hollowly from the subterranean room as she dropped through the opening to reach the children.
Above ground, in the living room, the three uniform officers swarmed past Arthur, securing the perimeter and heading toward the kitchen to subdue Helen.
Arthur remained on his knees by the open vent, still holding the tiny, ice-cold hand of the toddler who had reached out to him. Slowly, he looked back over his shoulder toward the couch where Lily was sitting.
The little girl had stopped hiding beneath her schoolbag. She was sitting upright now, her legs swinging again, her long light brown hair falling back over her pink shirt. But her face had changed. The deadpan, frightened obedience was entirely gone. In its place was a chilling, vacant expression that mirrored Helen’s exact stare.
"She’s coming back, you know," Lily said in a normal, conversational tone that sent a fresh wave of ice water through Arthur’s veins.
Arthur turned around slowly, his heart hammering against his ribs like a sledgehammer. "Lily? What... what did you say?"
"Mommy always comes back," Lily repeated, tilting her head at an unnatural angle. She reached down into her pink schoolbag and pulled out something heavy and metallic, setting it gently on the wooden coffee table.
It was a heavy steel master key, stained with dark, dried grease.

Before Arthur could speak, the sound of a gunshot echoed sharply from the kitchen, followed instantly by the heavy thud of a body hitting the floor and a frantic shout for a medic over the police radio.
