Chapter 13 - The Uninvited Guests

The heavy footsteps on the front porch did not pause at the police tape. They marched straight across the wooden deck, heavy and deliberate, accompanied by the distinct sound of a crowbar sliding against the exterior door frame.
Investigator Vance whipped around, drawing her service weapon from its holster with a swift, practiced motion. "Stay back, Mr. Carter! Everyone stay down!"
Before the uniform officers in the hallway could react, the front door splintered inward with a loud, cracking crash. The deadbolt lock sheared off its hinges, flying across the foyer and embedding itself in the drywall.
Three men stepped through the shattered doorway. They wore plain black tactical gear with no insignia, their faces half-hidden beneath dark balaclavas. The man leading the group held a suppressed pistol pointed firmly toward the floor, moving with the cold efficiency of professional enforcers.
"Federal jurisdiction is terminated," the lead man said, his voice flat, modulated, and devoid of regional accent. "Step away from the asset, Investigator."
Vance didn't lower her weapon. She planted her feet wide, aiming her Glock squarely at the lead enforcer's chest. "Federal Protective Services! Drop your weapons or I will open fire! This is an active crime scene!"
The enforcer didn't flinch. He didn't raise his weapon, but he made a subtle hand gesture behind his back. "You’re standing in a privately funded transitional facility, Agent Vance. The woman in the kitchen was an independent contractor who went rogue. We are here to secure the remaining inventory and close the file."
Arthur shrank back against the sofa, his heart pounding in his throat. Inventory. They were talking about the children. They were talking about Lily and the toddlers rescued from the subterranean nursery as if they were corporate assets to be retrieved after a failed branch audit.
"They aren't inventory! They're children!" Arthur screamed, breaking his silence as he scrambled to his feet.
The lead enforcer turned his cold, dark-lensed tactical goggles toward Arthur. "Quiet, Mr. Carter. Your compliance metrics were evaluated and approved three years ago. You fulfilled your contractual obligation when you signed the adoption waiver while under post-operative sedation. You have no legal standing here."
Arthur looked over at Investigator Vance, expecting her to call for immediate backup, expecting the uniform police officers to rush down the hall.
Instead, the two uniform officers who had entered the living room earlier lowered their firearms, stepping back and standing at attention beside the doorway as if they had been waiting for these exact men to arrive.
Arthur’s blood ran cold. The corruption wasn't local. It wasn't just Helen. The entire institutional apparatus—from the adoption agencies to the local police oversight—was wired into the network.
"You're part of it," Arthur whispered, staring at the uniform officers in utter disbelief.
Before Vance could process the betrayal, Lily stepped past her father, walking calmly across the room toward the men in black tactical gear. She didn't look scared. She walked with the precise, rhythmic gait of a soldier falling into formation.
The lead enforcer reached down, extending a gloved hand to take Lily’s small, pale fingers.
"Good evening, Batch Three," the enforcer said smoothly. "Are the floors clean?"
Lily nodded once, her expression entirely deadpan. "Clean and dry."

As the enforcer turned to lead her toward the shattered front door, Lily paused over the heavy steel master key lying on the floor, turned her head slightly, and looked back at Arthur one last time with eyes that held no memory of him at all.
