Chapter 14 - The Final Audit

The living room seemed to tilt on its axis as Arthur watched the enforcer lead Lily toward the shattered doorway. The uniform officers stood like statues, blocking the exit, their faces rigid and impassigned. Investigator Vance’s gun was still raised, her knuckles white around the grip, but her professional certainty had fractured into open disbelief.
"You can't take her," Vance shouted, her voice echoing off the bare walls. "This is a federal child abduction case! I have active warrants!"
The lead enforcer didn't even turn around. He walked steadily across the threshold, guiding Lily out onto the porch as the morning light gave way to the bruised gray shadows of an approaching afternoon storm.
"The warrants were sealed under national security directive 11-B twenty minutes ago, Agent Vance," the enforcer replied over his shoulder, his voice completely indifferent. "Check your terminal. The file no longer exists."
Vance’s expression hardened. She lowered her weapon an inch, her mind racing through the protocol bypasses that could authorize such an erasure. "That’s impossible without a signature from the Director."
"The Director signed it this morning," the enforcer said simply, pulling Lily down the porch steps toward an unmarked black SUV idling at the curb.
Arthur stumbled forward, ignoring the uniform officers who blocked his path. He threw his weight against the shoulder of the nearest officer, trying to push past him. "Lily! Lily, stop!"
The officer didn't flinch. With a single, fluid motion, he caught Arthur’s arm, twisted it behind his back with practiced brutality, and slammed him face-first onto the living room floor. The hardwood floor pressed hard against Arthur’s cheek, the smell of dust and old wax filling his nose.
"Stay down, Mr. Carter," the officer said coldly.
From the doorway, the sound of the black SUV doors slamming shut echoed through the house, followed by the deep, resonant purr of a high-performance engine accelerating down the residential street.
Investigator Vance stood frozen in the center of the room, her hand hovering over her radio. She pulled the device from her belt, pressed the transmission key, and spoke into the void. "Control, this is Agent Vance. Status update on the extraction... Control, do you copy?"
Only static answered her. A high-pitched, metallic hiss of white noise filled the air, completely wiping the channel clean.
Slowly, Vance lowered her radio. She looked down at Arthur, who was still pinned to the floor by the corrupt officer. The fight had entirely drained out of him. The illusion was gone, the house was empty, and the system had swallowed every trace of truth.
"They're gone," Arthur whispered into the floorboards, his voice breaking into a dry, hollow sob. "They're really gone."
"Not yet," Vance said quietly, stepping over to the coffee table and picking up the heavy steel master key that Lily had left behind. She tucked it securely into the pocket of her trench coat. "The digital drives in the master bedroom survived the wipe. Helen didn't back them up to the cloud. She kept them offline."
Arthur lifted his head slightly, his bloodshot eyes meeting Vance’s gaze. "What are you saying?"
"I'm saying the system is compromised, Mr. Carter," Vance said, her eyes flashing with a fierce, quiet determination. "Which means we take the evidence outside the system."

Before the corrupt uniform officers could react, Vance drew a concealed secondary flash-bang grenade from her tactical belt, pulled the pin with her teeth, and hurled it directly into the center of the hallway.
