Chapter 8: The Voice on the Stairs

The name hung in the damp air of the hallway, chilling Elena to the very bone. She clutched Maya so tightly against her red silk blouse that the baby let out a brief, startled squeak.
"David, don't go up there. It's a trap, let's just get out of the house," Elena pleaded, her thumb hammering frantically against her phone screen where the emergency call was still failing to connect due to a sudden lack of cellular signal. No service. The small banner at the top of her phone read mockingly.
David didn't back down. His jaw remained clenched, every muscle in his tall frame coiled like a spring ready to snap.
"I said, who the hell are you?" David demanded again, taking another deliberate step toward the base of the dark stairwell.
From the shadows of the upper landing, a tall, gaunt figure emerged into the faint amber glow of the emergency wall lights. The man wore a dark, heavy mechanic's jacket, his face shadowed by the brim of a baseball cap, but the smirk playing across his thin lips was unmistakably clear. It was a face David hadn't seen in over a decade—a face from a past he had worked tirelessly to bury.
"Long time, David. You really thought you could run away to the suburbs and pretend your old debts didn't exist?" the man rasped, resting a hand casually against the banister.
Elena gasped, stepping back until her spine pressed hard against the hallway wallpaper.
"David... who is that? Do you know him?" Elena asked, her voice cracking with betrayal and fear.
David didn't look back at his wife. His eyes remained locked on the intruder, his breathing turning heavy and restrained as the terrible weight of his past caught up with him in the middle of a quiet suburban hallway.
"You should have stayed away, Marcus," David said, his voice dropping into a deadly, gravelly whisper.

Marcus chuckled, a dry, humorless sound that echoed off the high ceilings.
"Stay away? And miss the family reunion? I think not. Especially not when you've got such a lovely wife and a brand-new baby to keep as collateral," Marcus replied, taking a slow step down the stairs, his hand sliding into the deep pocket of his jacket.
