Chapter 1: The First Fracture
The bright nursery room felt instantly smaller as Elena rushed across the white rug, her red silk blouse catching the pale afternoon light. Her dark pants made a soft rustling sound against the hardwood floor as she stopped inches from Clara, the nanny. Clara knelt beside the white crib, her brown hair pulled into a tight bun, her grey nurse scrub top stained with sweat. Clara held little Maya tightly against her chest, weeping softly while the infant wailed.
Elena stared down at them, her chest heaving with raw panic and rising fury. Her eyes darted from the tear-streaked face of the nanny to the red mark blooming on the baby's soft cheek.
"What the hell happened?!" Elena screamed, her voice cracking under the weight of sheer terror.
Clara squeezed her eyes shut, rocking back and forth on her knees.
"I didn't mean to, I swear to God I didn't mean to," Clara choked out, her entire body trembling violently.
David burst through the doorway behind them, his tall frame filling the threshold. His short brown hair was slightly disheveled, and his dark blue button-down shirt pulled tight across his broad shoulders as his face twisted into an expression of pure, unadulterated rage.
"She dropped the baby!" Elena yelled, pointing a shaking finger down at the kneeling woman.
David took two heavy steps into the room, his eyes locking onto the weeping nanny with a cold, terrifying intensity. The air in the room grew suffocatingly heavy.
"How dare you touch my daughter?" David growled, stepping over a stray toy.
Elena spun to face her husband, her face flushed with adrenaline, her finger still jabbing toward Clara.

"Fire her! Fire her right now!" Elena demanded, her voice shrill and desperate.
David ignored his wife for a fraction of a second, his cold gaze sweeping past Clara to the white baby monitor mounted quietly on the wall. A tiny green indicator light blinked steadily in the corner of the room, recording every single second of what had just transpired.
