Chapter 5: The Shadow in the Frame

The small phone screen glowed brightly in the dimming light of the nursery. Elena leaned in closer, her breath catching in her throat as she watched the playback on David's phone. The timestamp read 3:14 PM. The room was entirely empty. Clara was downstairs in the kitchen, and both David and Elena were in the home office. Yet, clearly visible on the screen, a tall shadow detached itself from the white closet door and glided silently toward the crib.

"Who is that?" Elena whispered, her fingers tightening involuntarily around Maya's blanket.

David didn't reply. His face was entirely devoid of color, his jaw set so tightly it looked carved from stone. He pressed the fast-forward button, skipping past the silent figure hovering over the sleeping infant, right up to the moment Clara rushed back into the room.

On the screen, Clara didn't trip because she was clumsy. The video showed the nursery door flying open on its own, propelled by a violent gust of wind from the hallway, followed by an unseen force shoving Clara hard from behind, sending her crashing into the crib.

Elena let out a short, sharp gasp, stumbling backward until the back of her knees hit the rocking chair.

"That's... that's impossible. All the windows were locked. There was no wind," Elena stammered, her eyes darting from the phone screen to the actual hallway door across the room.

David’s hand dropped to his side, the phone screen locking and going black. The sudden darkness on the display felt heavier than the shadows in the room.

"She wasn't lying about someone being in the house," David said, his voice barely audible.

"Then where did they go? You checked the perimeter alarm!" Elena cried out, panic flaring anew in her chest.

"I checked the exterior doors," David corrected, turning slowly to face her with a look of profound dread in his eyes. "I didn't check the basement access hatch."

Before Elena could process the terrifying implication of his words, a heavy, metallic thud echoed from the floorboards right beneath their feet, sounding as though someone down in the dark cellar was slowly dragging something very large and very heavy across the concrete.
