Chapter 10: The Digital Noose

The small black thumb drive seemed to absorb all the light in the hallway. David took a sudden, aggressive step forward, lunging for Marcus with blinding speed, but Marcus was too quick. He pivoted sharply on the stair tread, pulling a small pocketknife from his belt and flicking the blade open with a sharp click.
"Ah-ah, I wouldn't do that if I were you, big guy," Marcus warned, holding the blade steady inches from his own chest, effectively keeping David at bay. "One wrong move, and I snap this little drive in half. Or better yet, I mail the password to federal investigators who would love to see how a bankrupt software engineer suddenly bought a two-million-dollar house in cash."
David froze mid-stride, his chest heaving as he stared at the knife and then at the thumb drive. Every muscle in his tall frame trembled with repressed violence, but he knew Marcus held all the cards.
Elena clutched Maya tighter, her mind reeling from the avalanche of shattering revelations.
"You lied to me," Elena whispered, her voice thick with heartbreak and absolute betrayal. "Everything—this house, our life, the savings—it's all built on stolen money and lies?"
David finally turned his head to look at his wife, his eyes filled with a desperate, pleading agony that Elena had never seen before.
"Elena, listen to me. I cleaned up my act. I built a legitimate business after that. I earned every penny we have now. I only took that loan because my family was starving, and these men... you don't understand what kind of men they are," David pleaded, taking a hesitant step back toward her.
"Don't come near me," Elena hissed, stepping back away from him as if his very touch was poisonous.
Marcus watched the domestic fallout with amused detachment, casually tossing the thumb drive from one hand to the other before catching it again.

"Oh, touching domestic drama, truly. But time's up, folks. The real boss is waiting downstairs in the kitchen, and he wants a word with the man who thought he could hide forever," Marcus said, gesturing mockingly toward the staircase leading down to the ground floor.
Before David could formulate a counter-move, the heavy front door downstairs clicked open with a loud, mechanical buzz, followed by the sound of heavy dress shoes stepping smoothly onto the pristine hardwood entryway below.
