Clara submitted an official Victim Impact Statement to the District Attorney’s office, requesting a plea bargain that included mandatory intensive psychiatric rehabilitation alongside a reduced prison sentence.
The District Attorney was hesitant. “Mrs. Vance, crimes of this nature usually demand severe retribution. Why are you offering this?”
“Because punishment alone doesn't heal broken people,” Clara replied firmly. “Justice without mercy is just legal revenge. I want my daughter to grow up in a world where we heal wounds instead of multiplying them.”

The DA was moved by Clara’s extraordinary grace. He agreed to present the plea offer to the judge: seven years in a secure psychiatric correction facility with mandatory therapy, followed by probation, contingent upon Eleanor accepting full responsibility without appeal.
When the offer was presented to Eleanor in her cell, she sat stunned. She had expected Clara to demand she rot in prison for the rest of her life. She couldn't comprehend why the woman she had harmed would offer her a lifeline.
