Two months later, as the court date for Eleanor’s preliminary trial approached, Clara made a decision that shocked everyone, including her own legal counsel. She asked her lawyer to arrange a private meeting with Eleanor’s public defender.
“Mrs. Vance, your mother-in-law is facing up to twenty years in state prison,” Attorney Hayes warned. “Given the severity of the assault and the video footage from the shower, conviction is almost guaranteed.”
“I know,” Clara said calmly, cradling three-month-old Hope in her arms. “But I don't want maximum punishment. I want accountability paired with psychiatric treatment.”

When Mark heard about her intention, he was stunned. “Clara, she almost killed you! How can you offer her mercy?”
“Mark, if we respond to her bitterness with endless vengeance, this war in your family will never end,” Clara said gently, placing her hand over his. “Your mother’s heart was broken thirty years ago when your brother died. She lived in fear, and fear turned her into a monster. If we don't break this cycle now, Hope will grow up carrying the weight of this hatred.”
