Chapter 6: A Mother’s Fragile Breath

At six weeks old, baby Hope suffered a sudden respiratory collapse in the NICU. Alarms blared throughout the pediatric ward as nurses ran into the room. Clara and Mark stood outside the glass, clutching each other in helpless agony as medical staff performed CPR on the tiny infant.

“Come on, Hope... keep fighting, baby girl,” Mark prayed aloud, tears streaming down his face.

Clara closed her eyes and prayed not just for her child, but for wisdom. Sitting in that hallway, watching her baby fight for life, Clara realized how easy it was for pain to curdle into anger, and anger into hatred. That was the path Eleanor had walked thirty years ago when she lost her first child.

“I won't let tragedy turn me cold,” Clara whispered into the silent air. “I won't pass down this hatred.”

After twenty agonizing minutes, the head physician stepped out. Hope’s pulse had stabilized. She was out of immediate danger. As Clara pressed her palm against the incubator glass, watching her daughter’s chest rise and fall, a quiet resolve settled deep within her soul.
