Chapter 7: Confrontation in the Hallway

The numerical data on the laptop screen seemed to mock Ethan, glowing in the dimly lit home office. Eighty-five thousand dollars. Every cent they had set aside for Lily’s future education, emergency repairs, and medical safety net had been systematically drained and funneled into an offshore trust controlled entirely by Martha. The betrayal was so absolute, so calculated, that Ethan felt physically ill. He slammed the laptop lid shut, the sharp plastic click shattering the oppressive quiet of the room.

He stood up so fast his chair rolled backward and crashed into the bookshelf behind him, sending a few loose paperback novels tumbling to the floor. Ignoring the mess, Ethan strode out of the office and marched down the hallway toward the guest bedroom where Martha had retreated.

He didn't bother knocking. With a sharp shove, he pushed the wooden door open. The guest room was dark, illuminated only by the ambient orange glow of a streetlight filtering through the sheer curtains. Martha was standing by the closet, her red dress rustling softly as she methodically zipped up a hard-shell leather suitcase resting on the bed. She didn't look surprised by his sudden, aggressive entrance; in fact, she moved with the calm, methodical precision of someone who had anticipated this exact confrontation from the very beginning.

"You’re working fast," Martha said without turning around, her voice unnervingly steady as she smoothed down the collar of a blouse inside her suitcase. "I assumed you would take at least another hour to find Sarah’s digital dead man's switch. She always was entirely too organized for her own good."

Ethan closed the distance between them in two long strides, his heavy work boots thudding against the carpet. He grabbed the edge of the suitcase and wrenched it off the bed, sending its contents spilling across the mattress. "You stole from us," Ethan growled, his voice vibrating with a dark, suppressed fury that terrified even himself. "Eighty-five thousand dollars. Life insurance, savings, our entire safety net. Transferred to an offshore trust under your name. You didn't just hide my daughter's medical records; you systematically robbed a grieving widower and a sick child."

Martha turned around slowly, crossing her arms over her red dress. Her posture was entirely unrepentant, her eyes flashing with a cold, aristocratic disdain. "I didn't steal anything, Ethan. That money was part of the family estate. Sarah signed the transfer authorizations during her final hospital stay when she was heavily medicated and desperate to secure her daughter's long-term care without your volatile temper interfering in financial matters."

"She was dying!" Ethan shouted, stepping closer until he towered over her. "She was fighting for her life against an aneurysm, and you coerced her into signing away our financial security while her brain was failing her? That is financial fraud, Martha. That is a prison sentence."

Martha scoffed, shaking her head with a patronizing chuckle. "Go ahead and try to prove coercion in a court of law, Ethan. You're a residential contractor who works sixty hours a week with dirt under your fingernails. I have retained top-tier legal counsel who specialize in estate preservation for vulnerable families. If you make a single public move against me, I will launch a custody petition claiming you are an unstable, aggressive father incapable of providing a stable environment for a special-needs child."
