The following morning, the superior courthouse downtown was bustling with lawyers, litigants, and bailiffs moving briskly through the marble-columned corridors. Ethan sat beside Marcus Vance at the wooden defense table, his hands folded tightly in his lap. He wore a simple, clean button-down shirt instead of his usual work clothes, though his calloused hands still bore the faint stains of drywall dust that no amount of scrubbing could entirely remove.
Across the aisle sat Martha, flanked by an expensive-looking attorney in a sharp charcoal suit who whispered notes into her ear. Martha looked composed, draped in an elegant navy blazer, projecting an aura of dignified matriarchal authority. She glanced over at Ethan once, her eyes cold and calculating, before turning her attention back to the bench.
"All rise for the Honorable Judge Elizabeth Sterling," the bailiff announced in a booming voice.
Everyone stood as an older female judge with sharp features and iron-grey hair entered the courtroom and seated herself behind the elevated mahogany bench.
"Please be seated," Judge Sterling said, adjusting her glasses as she reviewed the docket. Mr. Vance’s counsel, you have the floor."
Marcus stood up smoothly, buttoning his suit jacket. For the next twenty minutes, Marcus laid out the case with surgical precision. He presented Sarah’s scheduled email, detailing the systemic concealment of Lily’s medical condition and the psychological coercion of a minor child. He then submitted the banking transaction records showing the unauthorized transfer of eighty-five thousand dollars into an offshore trust managed solely by Martha. Finally, he presented the medical clinic’s documentation proving that Martha had systematically cancelled critical neurological treatments without parental consent.
When Marcus finished, Martha’s attorney stood up to object, arguing that the transfers were executed with the full consent of the late Sarah Vance under legal advisement for estate preservation. But Judge Sterling was not receptive to the argument. She flipped through the financial statements, her expression growing increasingly stern.
"Counsel," Judge Sterling interrupted, cutting off Martha’s lawyer mid-sentence. "A wife executing an eighty-five-thousand-dollar asset transfer while suffering from a fatal medical condition, without her husband's knowledge, does not constitute standard estate preservation—especially when those funds are routed into a trust controlled exclusively by her mother, who simultaneously concealed critical medical interventions from the child's legal father."
