Chapter 2: The Weight of Hidden Truths

The silence that followed Ethan’s accusation was deafening, broken only by Lily’s muffled sniffles from the floor. Ethan stood frozen in the center of the brightly lit bedroom, the stiff hospital document trembling violently in his calloused hands. His grey t-shirt clung to his damp back, soaked in a cold sweat born of pure shock. He looked at Martha, searching her aging face for a trace of denial, a flicker of guilt, or anything that might suggest this nightmare was a cruel misunderstanding. But Martha’s expression remained stubbornly guarded, her lips pressed into a thin, unyielding line. She pulled her red short-sleeve dress tighter around her frame, refusing to meet his burning gaze directly.
"Explain this to me right now," Ethan demanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low pitch that demanded answers. He thrust the folded medical paper toward her, the stark black ink detailing a series of neurological evaluations, developmental setbacks, and formal treatment plans scheduled over the past six months. "Lily’s doctor’s notes. Clear as day. Diagnostics, behavioral therapy mandates, specialist referrals. Dated all the way back to early autumn. Why is this in your bag, Martha? Why didn't Sarah and I ever see this? Why is my daughter's medical history locked away in your personal belongings like a dirty secret?"
Martha swallowed hard, her throat visibly tightening. She finally glanced down at the carpet before looking back up at Ethan, her eyes devoid of warmth. "You wouldn't understand, Ethan. You’re never home. You’re buried in your construction jobs, working sunup to sundown, trying to pay off the mortgage on this oversized house. Sarah was overwhelmed, and I stepped in to handle the administrative burdens. The medical board moves slowly. There was no reason to panic you with preliminary findings that hadn’t been finalized by the primary physician."
"Preliminary?" Ethan shouted, the restraint finally snapping as anger eclipsed his shock. He took a harsh step toward her, causing Martha to lean back slightly against the edge of the dresser. "This isn't preliminary! It says right here that specialized intervention was required months ago! Sarah would never hide this from me. Sarah shares everything with me!"
At the mention of Sarah’s name, the air in the room grew even colder. Martha’s eyes narrowed into sharp slits, and a bitter, mocking smile flickered briefly across her lips. "Sarah shares what she thinks you can handle, Ethan. But let’s be entirely honest with each other for once. Sarah was drowning under the weight of your expectations."

Lily whimpered from her spot on the mat, burying her face deeper into her stuffed rabbit. Hearing his daughter’s distress pulled Ethan back from the precipice of a full rage. He knelt down slowly, keeping the paper clutched in one fist, and gently placed his other hand on Lily’s shaking shoulder.
"Hey, sweetie," Ethan whispered, his voice softening instantly as he looked into his daughter's terrified eyes. "Look at me, Lily-bug. What else did Grandma tell you to keep a secret?"
