Chapter 11: Seeking Counsel

Later that morning, Ethan arranged for a neighbor to watch Lily for a few hours while he drove into downtown Seattle. The city streets were bustling with mid-morning traffic, the grey autumn sky matching the heavy mood weighing on his shoulders. He parked his battered pickup truck in a public garage and walked three blocks to a modest, nondescript office building housing a firm specializing in family estate litigation and elder financial exploitation.
The waiting room of Halloway & Vance Legal Associates was quiet, smelling of fresh carpet and old law books. After a brief wait, a middle-aged attorney named Marcus Vance—no relation, despite the shared surname—invited Ethan into his private office. Marcus was a sharp, pragmatic lawyer with silvering temples and a keen, observant gaze that missed nothing.
Ethan sat across the mahogany desk, sliding the stack of medical documents, Sarah’s printed email, and the bank transaction records across to the attorney. Marcus adjusted his reading glasses, pulled the papers toward him, and began reading in complete silence. The only sound in the office was the steady ticking of a brass desk clock.
For twenty minutes, Marcus reviewed the evidence without speaking. Finally, he looked up over the rims of his glasses, his expression grave.
"This is a textbook case of systemic elder-assisted financial manipulation and custodial interference," Marcus said, leaning back in his leather chair. "Your mother-in-law exploited a period of severe medical vulnerability while your late wife was incapacitated. Transferring eighty-five thousand dollars of marital assets into an offshore trust under her own name without your knowledge constitutes clear financial fraud. Furthermore, using psychological coercion against a seven-year-old child to conceal medical records crosses the line into emotional endangerment."
Ethan leaned forward, resting his forearms on the desk. "Can we freeze the trust? Can we get that money back before she relocates it?"
"We can file an emergency injunction with the superior court first thing tomorrow morning," Marcus replied, pulling a legal notepad toward him and clicking his pen. "We will request a temporary restraining order freezing the offshore accounts pending a forensic audit of the transfer authorizations. We will also submit the necessary documentation to lift the administrative hold on your daughter's medical files at the Boston clinic."

"And the custody threat?" Ethan asked, the anxiety he had suppressed all morning finally cracking his exterior. "She threatened to launch a petition claiming I’m an unstable, aggressive father incapable of caring for a special-needs child."
Marcus offered a reassuring, confident smile. "Let her try. Courts heavily favor biological parents unless clear, documented evidence of abuse or neglect is established. Her track record of concealing medical treatments and embezzling family funds will actually work heavily against her credibility once we present it to a judge. She played a very high-risk game, Mr. Vance, and she overplayed her hand."
