Chapter 8

The aftermath of the archive meeting was swift and merciless. By evening, the story had leaked to the regional press, transforming what was initially whispered about as a dramatic society snub into a major corporate scandal. Reporters swarmed the gates of the Shaw Harbor estate, their camera flashes cutting through the driving rain like strobe lights. Beatrice’s name, once synonymous with philanthropic grace and high society untouchability, was now plastered across financial headlines alongside terms like embezzlement, fiduciary breach, and abuse of trust.
Inside the quiet study of her family home, Beatrice sat in total darkness, save for the amber glow of a single desk lamp. The velvet gown from the gala hung over the back of a chair like a discarded theatrical costume, mocking her previous grandeur. She had received three text messages in the last hour—one from Marcus Thorne resigning his position as managing partner, one from her primary legal counsel dropping her representation, and one from the country club revoking her lifetime membership. The ruthless efficiency of elite society had cast her out the moment her leverage evaporated.

A soft knock at the door broke her solitude. Beatrice did not look up as it opened, assuming it was the housekeeper coming to collect the remaining personal effects. Instead, Clara stepped into the room, holding a single manila envelope. Clara looked tired, the sharp edge of her professional armor softened by the weight of what had just transpired. She walked across the room and placed the envelope on the edge of the desk, remaining standing at a respectful distance.
“What is this?” Beatrice asked, her voice hollow and defeated. “Another audit? More proof of my failure?” Clara shook her head slowly. “It’s a notarized agreement releasing you from personal criminal liability regarding the municipal fund transfers,” Clara said quietly. “Eleanor agreed to cover the shortfall using private Vance family capital, under one condition.” Beatrice looked up slowly, her eyes bloodshot and cynical. “And what does the queen demand as tribute? My complete silence? Banishment from the coast?”
