Chapter 2

The murmurs resumed like the rising tide against a rocky shore, but the festive atmosphere of the Shaw Harbor winter gala had permanently fractured. Eleanor Vance turned her back on the stunned crowd, her cane clicking rhythmically against the hardwood as she walked toward the private parlor, leaving Clara to navigate the fallout alone. Beatrice marched across the floor, her velvet gown sweeping the dust of the ballroom as she closed the distance between herself and the woman she once considered a sister in ambition. The guests parted instantly, desperate to avoid the shrapnel of a collapsing alliance.

Clara remained completely still, her hands buried deep in the pockets of her black trench coat. She watched Beatrice approach with the detached clinical interest of an attorney examining a hostile witness. When Beatrice stopped just inches away, her breath coming in shallow, angry gasps, Clara did not blink. She knew every legal loophole Beatrice intended to exploit, every offshore account linked to the Van Der Hoven family trust, and most importantly, the fatal flaw in the legacy Beatrice had spent her life trying to inherit.

“Explain yourself, Clara,” Beatrice whispered, her voice dropping an octave into a dangerous, private register. “After everything we built. After every secret I trusted you with to protect the estate from Eleanor’s erratic whims. You traded it all for a title that was supposed to be mine?” The pain beneath Beatrice’s anger was palpable, rooted in a lifetime of obedience to a system that rewarded birthright over merit. Clara tilted her head slightly, her red lipstick parting as she offered a measured, uncompromising response that only fueled Beatrice’s frustration.

“You built a cage, Beatrice, and you spent your whole life decorating the bars,” Clara said softly, her voice carrying an understated authority that commanded attention without shouting. “Eleanor didn't buy my loyalty. She opened the door. Shaw Harbor is changing whether the old families want it to or not, and I prefer to be the one holding the blueprint rather than the one begging for a room inside.” With those words, Clara turned away from her former friend, slipping through the side exit before Beatrice could formulate a reply, leaving the ballroom in a state of suspended animation.
