Chapter 5

Clara sat behind her sleek, minimalist desk in her downtown law office, the morning light cutting clean lines across her computer screens. Her phone buzzed continuously with withheld numbers and urgent emails from senior partners across the city, all demanding meetings, explanations, or backchannel negotiations regarding the Shaw Harbor succession. She ignored them all, focusing instead on a single encrypted file sent from an anonymous sender inside the municipal water authority. The file contained digital blueprints dating back to 1954, detailing the original land deeds of Shaw Harbor’s commercial district.
The door to her private office swung open without a knock. Beatrice stood in the doorway, stripped of her grand gala gown and wearing a sharp charcoal pantsuit that signaled she was moving from grief to combat. She closed the door firmly behind her, locking it with a sharp click that resonated in the quiet room. Clara did not look up immediately; she finished typing a sentence, saved the document, and finally turned her chair to face her former friend. The air between them was dense with unsaid history, shared late nights over case files, and the bitter taste of broken trust.

“You raided my personal archives,” Beatrice said, her voice remarkably controlled, though her jaw remained clenched. “You took files from my private home office under the guise of preparing our estate defense strategy, and you handed them directly to Eleanor.” Clara leaned back, folding her hands neatly in her lap. She did not deny the accusation; denial was a waste of breath between two people who knew each other's minds inside and out. “I didn't raid your office, Beatrice. You asked me to review the estate liabilities, and I found illegal asset transfers that you chose to conceal from the rest of the board.”
“I was protecting the family’s solvency during the market crash three years ago!” Beatrice snapped, taking a sharp step forward, her professional composure cracking just enough to reveal the panic underneath. “If the board had known the true extent of the deficit, they would have liquidated the historical district to foreign developers. I saved Shaw Harbor.” Clara shook her head slowly, her expression softening into genuine, albeit restrained, empathy. “By breaking the law and creating a cycle of blackmail that Eleanor has spent her entire life trying to dismantle. You became the very thing you swore to fight, Beatrice.”
