Chapter 5

The fluorescent lights of the county hospital emergency room buzzed with a relentless, maddening frequency. Sarah sat in a hard plastic chair in the waiting alcove, her white sweater stained with grass and tears, her mind trapped in a looping nightmare of what-ifs. Little Lily had finally fallen asleep curled up on the small couch next to her, exhausted by the sheer emotional terror of the afternoon.
Officer Vance stood nearby, leaning against the reception desk while speaking in hushed tones with the attending physician who had just emerged through the swinging double doors. Sarah stood up instantly, her legs feeling like lead as she hurried over to them.
"Doctor, how is my son?" she demanded, her voice cracking with exhaustion. "Is he going to wake up? What did they give him?"
The doctor, a tired-looking man with silver hair and kind eyes, took off his stethoscope and let out a long breath. "We managed to stabilize him, Mrs. Miller. The Narcan reversed the immediate effects of the synthetic opioid found in his system, and his breathing is unassisted now. However, he remains unconscious, and we need to run comprehensive toxicology panels to determine the exact long-term neurological impact of the drug."
Sarah slumped against the reception desk, the immense wave of relief crashing over her and leaving her utterly breathless. "Thank God. Can I see him?"
"Just for a few minutes," the doctor replied gently. "He's in pediatric intensive care, room four. But Officer Vance needs to speak with you regarding the preliminary findings from the pill bottle."

Vance stepped forward, holding a clear evidence bag containing the orange cylinder and the few remaining white pills. "We ran a preliminary chemical scan at the stationhouse. The pills match a restricted-schedule prescription medication typically used for severe neurological disorders—medication that requires a strict psychiatric evaluation to obtain. Elena claimed she found them, but our database check shows that a prescription for this exact compound was filled under Elena’s legal name at a downtown pharmacy less than forty-eight hours ago."
Sarah’s breath hitched in her throat. The cold realization settled deep into her bones. Elena hadn't just stumbled upon a random danger in the park; she had brought it there deliberately. But why? What kind of twisted vendetta could possibly drive a human being to put a lethal substance within reach of an innocent seven-year-old child?
