Chapter 12

The courtroom of the county courthouse was cold, cavernous, and smelled of polished mahogany and old paper. The wooden benches in the gallery were mostly empty, save for Marcus and a few distant relatives who had come to witness the final chapter of the family tragedy. Sarah sat in the front row, her posture rigid and resolute, her hand resting protectively over Little Lily's shoulder while Leo stayed safely at home with a trusted neighbor.

The heavy side door opened, and two bailiffs escorted Elena into the courtroom. She wore a standard-issue orange jumpsuit, her hair pulled back into a simple ponytail without makeup or styling. Her white blazer dress was gone, replaced by the stark, anonymous reality of an inmate awaiting trial. She looked older, her face drawn and gaunt, her eyes cast downward as she shuffled toward the defense table.

As Elena took her seat beside her court-appointed public defender, she briefly looked up and scanned the gallery. Her gaze locked onto Sarah. For a split second, a flash of her old defiance sparked in her eyes, but it quickly faded into a hollow, defeated stare. She realized then that her manipulation had completely backfired; she had engineered a trap for her sister, and instead, she had locked herself away forever.

The judge—a formidable woman with silver hair and steel-rimmed glasses—rapped her gavel sharply against the wooden block. "All rise for the Honorable Judge Katherine Sterling."

The courtroom stood in respectful silence as the judge took her seat, adjusting her papers before looking down at the case file. "We are here for the formal arraignment in the matter of the State versus Elena Vance. Defense counsel, how does your client plead to the amended charges of first-degree child endangerment and aggravated assault?"

Elena’s public defender stood up, clearing his throat nervously. "Your Honor, after thorough consultation with my client, Elena Vance enters a plea of guilty to all counts under the terms of the proposed plea agreement."

A heavy hush fell over the courtroom. Sarah let out a slow, steady breath, feeling the final knot in her chest begin to loosen. The legal nightmare was drawing to a close.
