Chapter 10

Down at the police precinct, Detective Miller and Officer Vance sat together in the cluttered squad room reviewing the final forensic reports compiled by the cyber-crime unit. The black smartphone recovered from the park had finally finished its cloud synchronization just moments before the battery died, unlocking a Pandora's box of digital history.
Miller clicked his mouse, bringing up a series of recovered audio transcripts and draft messages that Elena had prepared over the previous weeks. He turned the monitor slightly so Vance could read the glowing text on the screen.
"Look at this timestamp," Miller muttered, tapping the glass screen with a pen. "Three days before the incident at Maplewood Park. Elena searched online for pediatric drug absorption rates and maximum safe dosages for children under fifty pounds. This wasn't a spur-of-the-moment prank. It was calculated, premeditated child abuse."
Vance leaned in closely, his expression darkening. "She didn't necessarily want to kill him; she wanted to stage a dramatic medical scare that she could control, making herself look like the savior while humiliating Sarah. But she miscalculated the dosage, or she didn't care enough to check."
"Either way, criminal negligence resulting in near-fatal poisoning is an open-and-shut case with this digital trail," Miller said, picking up his coffee mug and taking a sip. "We have her browsing history, her direct admissions in deleted drafts, and the security camera footage from the nearby convenience store where she bought the water bottle she used to wash the pills down."
"What about the defense attorney?" Vance asked.

"Assigned public defender tried to file for a psychiatric evaluation and a reduced bond, but the judge took one look at the medical report and the premeditation evidence and denied bail entirely. Elena is staying behind bars until the trial starts next month."
Miller printed out the final packet of evidence, sliding it neatly into a heavy red folder marked FELONY PROSECUTION. The web of deceit Elena had spun around herself over the years had finally tightened into a noose. The legal machinery of the state was now moving forward with unstoppable momentum, leaving no room for excuses, family loyalty, or manipulation.
