Chapter 4

The arrival of the paramedics brought a chaotic flurry of medical equipment, oxygen masks, and shouted protocols. Two EMTs rushed across the lawn with a stretcher, immediately pushing Officer Vance and Sarah aside to begin emergency intervention. One paramedic slapped an oxygen mask over Leo’s face while the other attached leads to a portable cardiac monitor, the machine instantly filling the quiet park air with a rapid, erratic series of digital beeps.

"He's in respiratory depression," the lead paramedic announced urgently, his hands moving with practiced speed. "Pupils are pinpoint. Looks like an opioid overdose or heavy sedative toxicity. Let's push Narcan immediately and get an IV line established. Move, move!"

Sarah watched in horrified slow motion as her son was hoisted onto the gurney and wheeled rapidly toward the waiting ambulance. She tried to follow, but Officer Vance gently placed a hand on her shoulder, stopping her forward momentum. "Let them work, Sarah. You need to ride in the front with me, or follow in your car. We need to secure statements, and I need to ask you both some very serious questions about how this happened."

Elena stood by the tree, completely ignored by the medical crew, her white blazer looking entirely out of place amid the medical debris. Her phone was in a police pocket, her alibi was crumbling, and the dark reality of what had been set in motion was finally catching up to her. She looked at Sarah with a strange mixture of fear and resentment, as if somehow none of this was truly her fault.

"I'm coming too," Elena said defensively, stepping toward the ambulance doors before they slammed shut.

"No, you're not," Vance intervened, stepping directly into her path. He unclipped his radio, calling for a backup unit to transport a potential suspect to the local precinct. "You’re staying right here until Officer Miller arrives to take you in for questioning. Do not leave this park, Elena. That's an order."

Sarah climbed into the front passenger seat of the police cruiser, her hands shaking so violently she could barely pull the seatbelt across her chest. Little Lily sat in the back between two officers who had arrived as backup, her small arms wrapped tightly around a plush toy one of the kind-hearted medics had handed her. As the cruiser’s engine revved and they pulled away from the curb, Sarah looked back through the rearview mirror. Elena was standing alone by the tree, bathed in the flashing red lights of the police cars, looking smaller and much more vulnerable than she ever had before.
