Chapter 5: The Empty Nursery

David walked past Clara without another word, his footsteps heavy as he crossed the patio and slid open the glass door leading into the house. The interior was cool and dim compared to the glaring afternoon sun outside. He walked down the quiet hallway, passing framed family portraits that suddenly felt like cruel fakes, until he reached the second bedroom at the end of the hall.

The door was pushed slightly ajar. A warm, welcoming pastel-yellow light spilled out into the hallway. David pushed the door open fully and stepped inside the nursery.

The room was a masterpiece of domestic hope. A handcrafted white wooden crib sat against the far wall, draped with a handmade quilt embroidered with woodland animals. Shelves lined with classic children’s books and stuffed teddy bears flanked a rocking chair that David had spent three weekends assembling. A mobile of painted stars and crescent moons hung quietly from the center of the ceiling, completely motionless.

Every single item in the room had been chosen with love, paid for with hard-earned money, and imbued with the sacred anticipation of a father meeting his child. And now, standing in the center of the room, David felt the suffocating weight of total emptiness. There was no baby coming. There was no crib to be filled. There was only a shrine to an elaborate, suffocating illusion.

A soft rustle of fabric behind him announced Clara’s presence. She stood timidly in the doorway, her floral dress brushing the doorframe, still wearing the ridiculous prosthetic bump beneath her clothes. She hadn't bothered to remove it; stripping it off now felt pointless.

""David,"" she said softly, leaning her shoulder against the frame. ""I know this room breaks your heart. It breaks mine, too. Because even though the belly was fake... my love for you, and the family I wanted us to be, was completely real.""

David turned around slowly, his expression a mask of profound exhaustion. ""How can you talk about love, Clara? Love requires honesty. Love requires respect. What you did wasn't love—it was possession. You wanted a specific life, so you manufactured the script and forced me to play a role in your play.""

""I was afraid of losing you,"" Clara pleaded, taking a small step into the room, her voice trembling. ""After my miscarriage two years ago... when you pulled away into your work and couldn't even look at me without crying... I thought if we had a baby, everything would go back to the way it was. But you were still drifting away. I just wanted to hold onto us.""

David stared at her, the mention of the past miscarriage cutting through his anger with a sudden, sharp pain. He remembered those dark months, the silence in the house, the crushing grief that had nearly torn them apart. But instead of generating empathy, the realization made the present betrayal feel even more tragic. She hadn't just lied; she had weaponized their shared trauma to trap him in a perpetual cycle of guilt and artificial joy.
