Chapter 10: The First Joint Breakthrough

The raw honesty of that kitchen conversation served as the catalyst for their first truly productive joint therapy session with Dr. Harrison. The office was warm, late-afternoon sunlight spilling across the rug as David and Clara sat side by side on the sofa, facing the therapist.

""For months, we’ve been focusing on the symptom—the prosthetic belly, the elaborate charade, the public humiliation,"" Dr. Harrison said, leaning forward with her notepad resting on her knees. ""Today, I want us to look at the soil from which that weed grew. David, in your individual sessions, you've confronted your own emotional withdrawal following the miscarriage. How does that connect to what happened?""

David looked down at his hands, interlocking his fingers tightly. He took a long, steady breath before speaking. ""I failed her,"" he said quietly, the words tasting bitter in his mouth. ""When we lost the baby, I felt like my body had betrayed me, our future had been stolen, and I didn't know how to comfort Clara because I couldn't even comfort myself. So I built a wall of work and routine. I made her feel invisible. I didn't cause her to fake a pregnancy, but I certainly created the vacuum that made her desperate enough to do it.""

Clara turned her head sharply toward David, her eyes wide with surprise. For months, she had braced herself for his unrelenting condemnation. Hearing him take ownership of his side of their marital breakdown felt like a sudden, warm ray of light piercing through a thick winter storm.

""David, you didn't force me to lie,"" Clara said softly, reaching out to place her hand over his. He didn't pull away; instead, he turned his hand over and loosely intertwined his fingers with hers. ""I made that choice. But hearing you acknowledge the darkness we were both drowning in... it means everything. I've spent two years blaming myself for losing the baby, and then blaming myself for the lie. Taking responsibility for my actions has been terrifying, but it’s the first time I’ve felt clean in years.""

Dr. Harrison watched them with a gentle, approving nod. ""Healing is not about erasing what happened, David and Clara. You cannot un-shatter the glass on that patio. But you can decide whether you want to sweep up the shards and build something new from the ground up, with authentic foundations, or walk away.""

""We can't walk away yet,"" David said, looking directly at Clara with a gaze that held neither anger nor pity, only a quiet, resolute determination. ""Not until we figure out who we are without the masks.""
