Chapter 2: The Echo of Truth

The shattering of the glass acted as a sonic anchor, freezing every single guest in their tracks. For three agonizing seconds, the only sound in the backyard was the frantic chirping of sparrows in the oak trees above. David stared down at the puddle of amber cider and shards of glass at his feet, his chest heaving under his light blue polo shirt. When he slowly raised his eyes, the warmth had entirely vanished from his expression, replaced by a dark, suffocating panic.

Clara made no immediate move to defend herself. Her hands remained frozen on the silicone prosthetic belly pillow strapped securely beneath her floral dress. The guests exchanged bewildered, horrified glances, whispering among themselves as the festive ambiance curdled into something ugly and unrecognizable. Aunt Sarah dropped her plate of finger sandwiches; the clatter felt deafening.

Lily, sensing the sudden weight of the tension she had inadvertently unleashed, shrank back slightly from the sofa. Her lower lip began to quiver, and large tears welled up in her innocent blue eyes, spilling over her flushed cheeks. She had only spoken what her hands had felt, yet the terrifying reaction of the adults around her made her feel as though she had committed a grave crime.

""Clara?"" David’s voice was barely a whisper, strained and cracked with a disbelief that cut straight to the bone. He took a hesitant step forward, his khakis brushing against the scattered glass. ""What is she talking about?""

Clara looked up at her husband, her chest rising and falling with shallow, rapid breaths. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. Her carefully constructed world, built on months of elaborate fabrication, was collapsing inward at a terrifying speed. The silence stretched, heavy and accusatory, demanding an answer that she desperately wanted to withhold but knew she could no longer hide.

Before Clara could form a lie, Lily began to cry softly, wiping her wet cheeks with the back of her small hand. Overwhelmed by the collective shock of the adults, the little girl turned away from the sofa and pointed a trembling finger toward the far corner of the patio, where a vintage white-painted wooden storage cabinet stood against the brick wall of the house.

""Go check the cabinet,"" Lily sobbed, her voice breaking through the heavy silence. ""You’ll find the fake belly in there.""

Every head turned in unison toward the wooden cabinet. The rustic piece of furniture, usually used to store outdoor cushions and gardening tools, suddenly looked like Pandora’s box. David’s eyes locked onto the cabinet doors. Without another word, ignoring the gasps and murmurs of his horrified family and friends, he began to walk toward it with heavy, mechanical steps.
