Chapter 3: The Wooden Cabinet

David crossed the patio with rigid, purposeful strides, the crunch of broken glass beneath his sneakers sounding like dry bones snapping. The guests stood paralyzed, forming a semi-circle around the sofa where Clara sat paralyzed in her floral dress. The golden sunlight felt harsh now, exposing every drop of sweat on David’s brow and every tremor in his hands as he reached the vintage white wooden cabinet.

The cabinet doors were closed with a simple brass latch. David paused for a fraction of a second, his hand hovering over the cold metal. He looked back over his shoulder, casting a fleeting, pleading glance at Clara, as if silently begging her to shout out and tell him it was all a cruel joke, a misunderstanding, a magic trick gone wrong. But Clara only stared down at her lap, her long blonde hair falling forward to shield her face from the judgmental gaze of the crowd.

With a sharp intake of breath, David lifted the latch and pulled both cabinet doors wide open.

Inside, neatly resting on a high stack of folded white cotton bath towels, sat another silicone prosthetic pregnant belly. Its matte, flesh-toned surface looked chillingly organic under the harsh shadow of the cabinet interior, complete with a painted navel and subtle faux veins. Next to it lay a crumpled instruction manual for medical-grade adhesive and several spare straps.

A collective gasp echoed across the patio. Several guests covered their mouths in outright horror, while others muttered curses of sheer disbelief. David recoiled slightly, his hands gripping the edges of the cabinet doors so tightly his knuckles turned stark white. The physical evidence of his wife’s elaborate deception stared right back at him, mocking the past nine months of his life, his excitement, his preparations, and the nursery he had painted with his own hands.

""Oh my God,"" someone whispered in the crowd. ""It’s real. She wasn't... she never was.""

David turned slowly away from the cabinet, his gaze fixing on Clara with a terrifying, hollow emptiness. The anger had not yet arrived; it was replaced entirely by a profound, disorienting shock that made his knees feel weak. He walked back toward the sofa, ignoring the whispered chatter of the stunned onlookers who were now rapidly gathering their purses and whispering hurried excuses to leave.

Clara finally raised her head. Her eyes were shimmering with unshed tears, but her expression remained disturbingly calm, as if part of her was actually relieved that the exhausting secret was finally out in the open.

""David, please,"" Clara began, her voice trembling softly as she reached out a hand toward him. ""Let me explain.""
