Chapter 8

The heavy oak door splintered into a dozen pieces as the tactical team flooded into the bright modern kitchen, their assault rifles raised and laser sights painting red dots across the walls.

“Down on the ground! Do it now!” the lead tactical officer roared, his voice echoing off the quartz countertops and marble floor.

Agent Miller froze, his service pistol slipping from his fingers and clattering loudly against the kitchen tile.

Detective Vance didn't wait to be told; he dropped gracefully to his knees, lacing his fingers behind his head with the practiced ease of a career criminal who knew how to survive a raid.

“Clear!” shouted an officer in black tactical gear, sweeping through the pantry and kicking open the basement door.

Clara stood frozen in the center of the chaos, still clutching the heavy black thumb drive in one hand while using her other arm to shield little Lily, who had begun crying hysterically again.

“Don't shoot us! Please, we live here!” Clara screamed over the din of heavy boots and barking orders.

The lead tactical officer lowered his rifle slightly, stepping over Agent Miller’s prone form to approach Clara and the child.

“Are you Clara Miller?” the officer asked, his voice muffled behind a black Kevlar mask.

“Yes! Yes, I am,” Clara choked out, tears finally spilling over her lashes as the adrenaline crash hit her system like a physical blow.

The officer nodded, signaling two female officers in plainclothes to step forward from the hallway.

“Take the child and get her out of here,” the officer ordered, pointing toward the back exit that led to the secure courtyard. “Internal Affairs has jurisdiction now.”

As the two female officers gently lifted Lily into their arms and carried her out toward an unmarked black SUV, Clara tried to follow.

“Wait! I need to go with her,” Clara protested, tugging against the arm of a second tactical officer who gently blocked her path.

“You’re staying right here, Miss Miller,” a new voice said from the doorway.

A tall, sharp-featured woman in a charcoal-gray tailored pantsuit stepped into the kitchen, wearing silver-rimmed glasses and holding a leather binder.

She looked down at Agent Miller being hauled to his feet in plastic cuffs, then turned her cold, analytical gaze directly onto Clara.

“I’m Director Sterling,” the woman said, adjusting her glasses with a single finger.

Clara stopped breathing. The name hit her like a physical blow.

“Sterling?” Clara repeated, her voice shaking uncontrollably. “Are you... are you Julian’s mother?”

Director Sterling didn't blink; she walked slowly across the kitchen floor, her heels clicking rhythmically against the marble until she stood inches away from Clara.

“Julian is an idiot who couldn't manage a lemonade stand, let alone a multi-billion-dollar pharmaceutical trust,” Director Sterling said calmly.

She reached out, taking the black thumb drive directly from Clara’s unresisting fingers with a slow, deliberate motion.

“And you, Miss Miller,” Director Sterling continued, leaning in close so her voice was only audible to Clara. “You found files you were never meant to see.”

Clara tried to step back, but two armed guards materialized behind her, blocking every exit out of the kitchen.

Director Sterling slipped the thumb drive into her blazer pocket, pulled a small silver key from her collar, and unlocked a panel in the kitchen wall that Clara had never noticed before.

Inside the wall panel sat a rows-deep bank of digital servers humming with a deep, blue light.

“Welcome to the board of directors, Clara,” Director Sterling whispered, pulling a revolver from her holster and pointing it straight at the server rack. “Now, do you want to know what killed Sarah Jenkins, or shall I show you the live feed from your brother’s cell?”
