Chapter 14

The heavy iron poker struck the grandfather clock with a deafening clang, shattering the glass face into a thousand glittering shards that rained across the floor.
Julian grunted as he crashed hard against the wooden stacks of ledgers, wrestling fiercely with the figure who had tackled him from the doorway.
Clara clutched the ledger to her chest, pulling little Lily off the velvet settee and dragging her behind the heavy mahogany frame of the clock for cover.
“Stay down, Lily! Don't move!” Clara commanded, her eyes locked on the violent struggle unfolding in the center of the attic.

Clara stood up slowly from behind the clock, the heavy manila ledger still clutched tightly in her trembling hands.
Vance looked up, wiping a streak of soot from his forehead as he rose to his feet, breathing heavily from the exertion.
“You have the box, Miss Miller?” Vance asked, his voice dropping into its usual professional, calm register.
Clara didn't lower her guard, holding the ledger against her chest like a shield. “Why should I give it to you? You’re just as corrupt as the rest of them.”
Vance let out a tired sigh, holding his hands up in a gesture of total surrender.
