Chapter 1

The heavy front door clicked shut with a hollow echo that reverberated through the sunlit kitchen, carrying the sharp scent of ozone and spilled coffee.

Julian stood chest-heaving in the doorway, his black suit jacket rumpled, his dark hair falling across a sweat-dampened forehead.

On the gleaming white floor a few feet away, Clara pressed her cheek against the cold tiles, her black-and-white maid's uniform smudged with flour and soot.

Beneath her trembling arms, five-year-old Lily sobbed in ragged, high-pitched gasps, her bright yellow dress bunched around her waist.

Julian dropped to his knees, his expensive leather shoes scraping against the marble, and reached out with shaking hands to wrap his arms around both of them.

“You’re both safe now,” Julian whispered, his voice cracking as he pulled them into his chest, burying his face in Lily’s golden curls.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the flashing red and blue lights of two police cruisers painted the manicured lawn in an eerie, pulsing glow.

Through the frosted glass of the front door, a pair of uniformed officers shoved a violently thrashing Eleanor backward toward a waiting patrol car.

Eleanor’s white silk dress was torn at the shoulder, her blonde hair tangled around a face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated venom.

She spat something unintelligible at the glass before a burly officer forced her head down and clicked the cold steel handcuffs around her wrists.

Julian watched them through the glass, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched violently beneath his left eye.

Clara slowly lifted her tear-stained face from Lily’s back, her blue eyes wide, haunted, and brimming with an unspoken terror.

“She found the ledger, Julian,” Clara choked out, her voice barely a whisper above the sound of Lily’s whimpering breath.

Julian’s breath caught in his throat, and the color drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking ashen and terrifyingly frail.

“What are you talking about?” Julian lied, his eyes darting toward the pantry door that stood slightly ajar.

Clara shook her head, a bitter tear cutting a clean path through the dirt on her cheek as she stared past his shoulder.

“She didn’t just find the financial records, Julian,” Clara said, her voice dropping to a freezing, deadpan register. “She found the adoption papers for Lily, and the DNA test results from last Tuesday.”

Julian froze, his arms still locked around the child, as the front door handle suddenly rattled behind them.
