Chapter 11

The federal agent stepped past the subdued form of Director Sterling, his eyes fixed on the open wall panel and the smoking server rack.
“Gone?” the agent repeated, kneeling down to inspect the blackened circuit boards where Clara had pressed her hand. “Miss Miller, explain what you mean by gone.”
Clara didn't blink; she looked down at the glowing green indicator lights that were rapidly blinking off one by one, signaling a complete system purge.
“The dead-man’s switch executed the protocol the moment the door was breached,” Clara said, repeating the lie with absolute, chilling authority. “Every financial record, every medical trial, and every illegal wire transfer has just been distributed to three hundred independent journalists worldwide.”
The federal agent’s face turned ashen. He pulled a secure satellite phone from his coat pocket, punching in a frantic sequence of numbers with trembling fingers.
“Get me the Washington bureau chief... now!” the agent barked into the receiver, pacing across the shattered kitchen tile. “We have a catastrophic data leak originating from the Sterling estate. I repeat, full system wipe!”
On the floor, Director Sterling let out a low, hysterical laugh, her cheek pressed against the cold marble where her son Julian had stood in handcuffs only an hour earlier.
“You fool,” Director Sterling choked out, blood trickling from a small scratch on her lip where she had hit the floor. “You didn't destroy my empire... you just decentralized it. Without those encryption keys, the offshore accounts are frozen forever. No one gets the money. No one!”
Clara turned away from the fallen director, stepping over the broken glass and debris toward the hallway where little Lily was waiting with the female officers.
As she walked down the sunlit corridor, the heavy red-and-blue flashing lights from the police cruisers outside continued to paint the walls in alternating pulses of warning.
Clara pushed open the living room door, finding Lily sitting quietly on the sofa, clutching a stuffed rabbit while a female medic checked her pulse.
“Clara!” Lily cried out, scrambling off the cushions and running across the rug to bury her face in Clara’s apron. “Are the bad people gone?”
“Yes, sweetie, they’re gone,” Clara whispered, lifting the little girl into her arms and holding her tightly against her chest. “We’re going to pack our bags. We’re going somewhere far away from here.”
The female medic looked up from her medical kit, her expression solemn as she handed Clara a folded white envelope with no return address.
“An officer asked me to give this to you before he was taken away in the transport van,” the medic said quietly.
Clara took the envelope with one hand while holding Lily with the other. She broke the wax seal, her eyes scanning the handwritten note inside.
It was written in Detective Vance’s neat, precise cursive script.

“The servers in the kitchen were just a decoy, Clara. The real trust fund papers are in the attic, inside the antique clock. Don't let them burn the house down before you look inside.”
Before Clara could process the warning, a sudden, violent explosion rocked the foundation of the house beneath their feet, plunging the living room into total darkness.
