Chapter 8 - The Attic Secrets

The heavy silence in the living room was deafening after the call ended. Martha slowly lowered the phone, her mind spinning as she tried to decipher the caller's cryptic message. Someone who had left the birthday party early. Someone who had slipped away while Martha was busy screaming at Iris and smashing the cake table with a wooden stick.

"Uncle Robert," Iris said suddenly, the realization dawning on her with chilling clarity. "He left right after the first toast, claiming he had an early meeting."

"Robert," Martha repeated, her voice dripping with venom. "That cowardly snake. He knew about the debt all along, didn't he? He must have helped your grandfather set up the digital wallet before he passed away."

Without another word, Martha turned and marched toward the hallway stairs, her burgundy top still stained with frosting. Iris followed closely behind, the physical pain in her bruised arm completely forgotten in the face of this new betrayal. They climbed past the second-floor bedrooms and reached the narrow, rickety ladder leading up to the dusty attic.

Martha pushed open the ceiling hatch, pulling down the cord that dropped the folding wooden stairs with a heavy thud. Cobwebs hung from the rafters, and the air smelled of dry wood and old memories. Armed with a flashlight, Martha climbed up first, sweeping the beam across the cluttered space. Boxes of holiday decorations, broken chairs, and forgotten trunks lined the dark corners.

"Look for the family ledger," Martha instructed, her voice echoing in the enclosed space as she began tearing open a cardboard box filled with old accounting books.

Iris searched the opposite corner, her fingers brushing against a heavy leather-bound ledger resting on a wooden crate. She pulled it out, blowing off a thick layer of dust. Opening the cover, she shone her flashlight over the yellowed pages filled with her grandfather's meticulous handwriting.

Tucked neatly inside the middle pages was a folded piece of cardstock. Iris carefully pulled it out, shining her light directly onto it. A string of alphanumeric characters was printed alongside a cryptic QR code—the first half of the digital recovery key.

"I found it, Martha," Iris called out, holding the card up triumphantly.

Before Martha could respond, a sudden, heavy crash echoed from the floor below them, followed by the sound of shattering glass near the front entrance.
