Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Basement

The heavy oak door of the basement creaked open, releasing a wave of damp, musty air that made Iris shiver. She stood at the top of the wooden steps, her bruised arm throbbing with a dull, persistent ache. The memory of Martha’s wooden stick crashing into the birthday table still echoed in her mind. Downstairs, the dim glow of a single overhead bulb illuminated rows of forgotten cardboard boxes and old furniture. Martha had locked herself in the kitchen upstairs, demanding that Iris find the missing safety deposit box key before midnight.

Iris carefully stepped down, her sneakers squeaking against the concrete floor. She knew her grandfather had kept a secret stash of documents down here, but she had always assumed it was just old photographs and tax returns. The family had been tearing themselves apart over the estate since her grandfather passed away three weeks ago. Martha, her aunt by marriage, believed the old man had hidden a fortune in cash somewhere on the property.

"I didn't hide anything," Iris whispered to the empty room, her breath forming small clouds in the chilly air.

She began sorting through a stack of rusted filing cabinets. Papers rustled like dry leaves as her trembling fingers flipped through folders. Her mind raced with the painful words Martha had thrown at her during the ruined birthday party. Why was everyone so convinced that a sixteen-year-old girl held the key to a hidden inheritance? The emotional toll of the past hour was exhausting, leaving her feeling profoundly isolated and misunderstood.

Suddenly, her fingers brushed against something metallic taped to the underside of the bottom drawer. It was a small, heavy iron box, completely covered in dust. Iris held her breath, carefully peeling away the brittle gray duct tape. As the box dropped into her palms, a sharp metallic click echoed in the quiet basement. She lifted the latch, expecting money, but found only a single, aged envelope addressed in her grandfather's shaky handwriting.

Before she could pull out the letter, the basement door upstairs was wrenched open with a loud bang, and heavy footsteps began rushing down the wooden stairs.
