Chapter 10 - Flashing Lights and Broken Alibis

The chaotic burst of red and blue light flooded the living room, painting the scattered birthday balloons and ruined cake in an eerie, synthetic glow. Uncle Robert froze in his tracks, his hand hovering near the front door as the heavy crunch of tires stopping in the driveway echoed loudly through the broken window. Someone from the neighborhood must have called the police after hearing Martha screaming and seeing the commotion during the birthday party.
"Did you call the cops?" Robert hissed, glaring accusingly at Martha with a mixture of panic and fury.
"I didn't have to," Martha shot back, crossing her arms defensively. "Half the neighborhood heard you throwing a tantrum earlier, Robert. You’re trespassing in your own family's home, and you just broke a window."
Heavy footsteps approached the porch, followed by a sharp, authoritative knock on the damaged front door. "Police! Open up!" a deep voice called out from outside.
Robert’s face paled significantly. He knew that if the police searched his pockets, they would find the encrypted flash drive containing the second half of the recovery key—the piece he had stolen from the old man's safe before the party even started. He looked desperately around the room for another exit, his eyes locking briefly on the hallway leading to the back kitchen.
"You're ruining everything," Robert muttered under his breath, taking a sudden step backward.
Before Martha could react, Robert bolted down the hallway toward the back door, slamming it open just as the front door was pushed wide by two uniformed police officers stepping into the living room.
"Stay right where you are!" one of the officers shouted, drawing a flashlight and scanning the chaotic scene filled with broken cake, balloons, and shattered glass.
Martha raised her hands defensively, stepping in front of Iris to shield her from the officers' immediate line of sight. "Officer, thank goodness you're here. My brother-in-law just broke into the house and fled through the back."
The officer assessed the situation quickly, noting Martha’s stained burgundy top, the terrified teenager holding her bruised arm in the background, and the broken window. He pressed his radio to his shoulder. "Dispatch, we have a suspect fleeing on foot toward the rear alleyway. Send units to intercept."
Iris exhaled a shaky breath, her hand unconsciously pressing against the pocket containing the card with the first half of the digital key. The danger had escalated beyond family arguments into actual criminal territory.

As the officers began taking their initial statements, one of them noticed the iron box and scattered papers on the floor, his eyes narrowing with suspicion. "Care to explain what’s going on here tonight, ma'am?"
