Chapter 3 - The Weight of Inheritance

The revelation hung heavy in the humid air, silencing the distant laughter of children playing near the swings. Leo looked from the weathered face of Mr. Henderson to Sam’s pale, wide eyes. The park suddenly felt less like a safe haven and more like a stage where a much larger, more dangerous play was reaching its climax.

"My dad?" Sam shook his head, denial washing over his features. "No way. My dad’s a public defender. He fights for people."

"He used to," Mr. Henderson corrected softly, leaning on his rake. "Before the debts piled up and the mill payoffs started looking like college funds for you kids. That ledger contains the financial trail of every bribe that built this town's modern skyline."

"If that's true," Leo said, his voice dropping to a cautious whisper, "then why is my family back? My dad insisted we return this morning. He said we had to face whatever was coming."

Mr. Henderson let out a dry, humorless chuckle. "Because running only works if the people chasing you are slower, son. Your father didn't come back to hide. He came back to cut a deal."

Before either boy could process the warning, a sleek black sedan pulled up sharply to the curb alongside the park grounds. The tinted window rolled down halfway, revealing the stern, familiar profile of Leo’s father, his jaw clenched tight as he stared directly at them.

"Get in the car, Leo," his father called out, his voice unnaturally calm yet carrying an unmistakable edge of absolute authority.

Leo froze, looking at Sam, whose grip on the silver key grew so tight his knuckles turned stark white.

"Don't go with him," Sam whispered urgently, grabbing Leo’s forearm. "If your dad is cutting a deal, you're just the collateral."
