Chapter 1 - The Echo of an Empty Promise

The bright afternoon sun beat down mercilessly on the green park grounds, casting long, wavering shadows near the weathered wooden structure and the green pavilion in the background. Leo stood frozen for a split second, his gray t-shirt sticking slightly to his skin from the run, his tan shorts dusty at the knees. He had just shouted those joyful words across the grass, colliding into his best friend Sam in a tight, breathless embrace. But the warmth of that reunion dissolved the instant Sam pulled back, his expression turning cold and distant.
"You're lying, Leo," Sam muttered, his voice sharp and laced with an unexpected bitterness that sliced through the warm air.
"What are you talking about?" Leo asked, his chest still heaving from the sprint across the lawn. "I literally just got back from my aunt's place. I missed you, man."
"Don't play dumb with me," Sam snapped, taking a harsh step backward and pointing an accusing finger toward the edge of the woods behind the pavilion. "I saw the police tape yesterday. I know why your family had to leave in such a massive hurry three weeks ago."
"My dad just changed jobs, Sam! You know that!" Leo raised his voice, his patience wearing thin as nearby park-goers glanced their way.
"My dad is the one who unlocked the precinct records, Leo!" Sam yelled back, his eyes flashing with a terrifying mix of betrayal and fear. "He told me about the box you and I dug up under the old floorboards of the abandoned mill. The box with the missing ledger!"
Leo felt the blood drain entirely from his face, his legs suddenly feeling like lead.
"We swore we'd never speak of that," Leo whispered, looking around frantically to ensure no one else was listening.

"Well, somebody already talked," Sam said, his voice dropping to a harsh, trembling whisper as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a tarnished silver key. "And they left this on my front porch this morning with a note telling me that you were the one who ratted us out to save your own skin."
