Chapter 14 - The Final Stand at the Pavilion

Leo struggled violently against the sheriff’s grip, kicking and twisting, but the handcuffs clicked shut around his wrists with a definitive, chilling snap.
"Let me go!" Leo shouted, his voice cracking with desperation as a few nearby park-goers turned their heads lazily to watch, assuming it was just a rowdy game among kids. "The mayor is a murderer! Mr. Henderson is right behind me!"
"Keep your voice down, kid," Sheriff Miller muttered, gripping Leo by the arm and dragging him across the grass toward a black SUV idling near the green pavilion.
As they reached the vehicle, the rear door swung open, and Sam was pushed out onto the grass, his hands also cuffed behind his back, his face bruised and covered in dirt. Their eyes met, and in that brief, silent exchange, all the anger and confusion melted away, replaced by a shared, unbreakable bond.
"Leo," Sam whispered, his voice shaking. "I'm sorry."
"We did it, Sam," Leo replied quietly, nodding toward his waistband where the leather-bound journal was still tucked securely against his back. "I have the journal."
Before the sheriff could react, the front doors of the SUV opened, and Mayor Vance stepped out, adjusting his expensive tie, his face flushed with anger and exhaustion.
"What is taking so long?" the mayor snapped at Sheriff Miller. "Get them in the car and take them to the county facility. We're clearing out tonight."
"We're not going anywhere," a firm, amplified voice echoed across the park grounds.
Everyone froze. From behind the wooden pavilion, a dozen federal agents in tactical gear emerged, their weapons drawn and pointed squarely at the mayor, the sheriff, and the emerging figure of Mr. Henderson, who had just climbed out of the drainage grate behind them, his face bruised and bleeding.
"Mayor Vance, Sheriff Miller, and Mr. Henderson," the lead federal agent called out through a megaphone, his voice cutting through the quiet afternoon air. "Step away from the children and place your hands behind your heads. You are under arrest for racketeering, corruption, and criminal endangerment."
The mayor’s face drained of all color. He looked around frantically for an escape route, but every exit was blocked by armed agents.

Leo watched with a profound, quiet sense of peace as the handcuffs were slapped onto the mayor and Mr. Henderson, the cold steel clicking shut on a legacy of lies that had poisoned their town for decades.
