Chapter 2 - The Key Under the Floorboards

Leo stared at the tarnished silver key resting in the palm of Sam’s hand, the afternoon sun glinting off its jagged edges. His mind raced back to the damp, suffocating darkness beneath the abandoned mill floorboards, where they had found the iron lockbox three weeks ago. It was supposed to be a childish adventure, a secret buried away from the world. Now, that same key felt like a loaded weapon aimed directly at their families.
"I didn't tell anyone, Sam," Leo said, stepping closer, his voice pleading for trust. "You have to believe me. Why would I rat us out when my own dad’s signature is on the second page of that ledger?"
Sam pulled his hand back, clutching the key tightly against his chest as if Leo might lunge for it. "My dad looked at me this morning with so much disappointment I couldn't even breathe, Leo. He said our families have been hiding things for over a decade. He packed a suitcase and left the house an hour ago. He said he has to protect us from whatever is coming."
"Protect us from what?" Leo asked, his voice trembling as a cold breeze swept across the park grounds, rustling the green canopy above the pavilion.
"From the people who owned that mill," a low voice interrupted from behind them.
Both boys spun around to see Mr. Henderson, the elderly groundskeeper who had maintained the park for as long as anyone could remember, leaning heavily on a wooden rake. His weathered face was shadowed beneath the brim of his faded cap, his clouded eyes fixed intently on the silver key in Sam's hand.
"Mr. Henderson?" Leo stammered. "What do you know about the mill?"
"I know that box was never supposed to see the light of day," the old man said, taking a slow step forward. "And I know that the person who left that key on Sam's porch isn't your friend, boys. They want you two pointing fingers at each other so you don't look at the real target."
"Who?" Sam demanded, stepping defensively in front of Leo.
May you like
Mr. Henderson pointed his gnarled finger past the wooden structure toward the old municipal building downtown. "The man currently running for mayor. He was the foreman at that mill twenty years ago, and your fathers helped him bury the evidence."
