Chapter 8: The Betrayal Inside the Office

Inside the Department of Justice building, the polished marble floors echoed with the hurried footsteps of bureaucrats and attorneys carrying thick stacks of briefs. Julian flashed his identification at the security desk and was directed to Suite 412 on the third floor. The office of Senior Investigator Marcus Vance was modest, cluttered with towering stacks of case files and legal transcripts that smelled of old paper and stale coffee.

Marcus Vance, a heavy-set man in his late fifties with graying hair and tired eyes, looked up from his desk as Julian walked in, placing Clara’s ledger squarely on the blotter.

"Mr. Vance, my name is Julian Vance—no relation," Julian began briskly, sliding the leather-bound book forward. "I have definitive proof of massive financial fraud, extortion, and corporate conspiracy tied to the Oakridge estate."

Marcus adjusted his reading glasses, flipping open the cover of the ledger. He scanned the handwritten entries, his expression remaining entirely neutral, almost unnervingly so. He didn't look surprised, nor did he look outraged. He simply turned the pages with slow, methodical precision.

"This is compelling, Mr. Vance," Marcus said slowly, closing the book and leaning back in his leather chair. "However, bringing federal charges based on private family ledgers requires formal forensic auditing, which can take weeks to authorize."

"Weeks?" Julian’s voice rose in disbelief, frustration cutting through his composure. "My wife is missing, my daughter’s life was threatened last night in our own home, and two criminals are currently liquidating our remaining assets across state lines. We don't have weeks!"

Before Marcus could reply, the heavy wooden door to the inner office clicked open, and a tall figure stepped out from the shadows of the adjacent filing room.

Julian spun around, his breath catching in his throat. It was Arthur. And right behind him, stepping out through the private side exit, was Eleanor, smoothing the lapels of her gold pantsuit with absolute calm.

"I told you, Julian," Arthur said with a cold, mocking smirk, sliding his hands into his pockets. "You really should have checked who Marcus Vance answers to before you drove all the way down here."

Julian lunged forward, blind with rage, but two armed security guards materialized from the hallway doors, grabbing his arms and pinning him against the edge of the desk before he could reach Arthur.

"You corrupt bastards," Julian shouted, struggling against the guards as Marcus Vance calmly picked up the ledger and slid it into his desk drawer, locking it with a brass key.

"It’s not corruption, Julian," Eleanor said, her voice dripping with venomous pity as she walked over to stand beside Marcus. "It’s efficient management. You were always too sentimental to protect your own interests. Now, sign the asset transfer papers, and perhaps we’ll let you and your daughter live out your days in peace."
