Chapter 4: The Locked Door

Midnight at Oakridge was a time of absolute, oppressive stillness. The wind rustled through the massive oak trees outside, casting long, skeletal shadows across Isabella’s bedroom ceiling. She lay wide awake under the heavy down duvet, her mind racing with the conversation she had shared with her father earlier in the evening. Julian had promised her that things would change, that the truth would finally come out, but as the hours ticked by, a gnawing sense of dread settled in her stomach.
Quietly, Isabella slipped out of bed, her bare feet making no sound against the polished hardwood floor of the hallway. The house was cold at night, the heating systems dialed down to save energy. She wrapped her cardigan tighter around her shoulders and crept toward the grand staircase. Her destination wasn't downstairs, however; it was the third-floor hallway—the forbidden zone where the heavy oak door remained locked behind a brass deadbolt.
As she reached the top of the stairs, the ambient light from the moon through the skylight illuminated the corridor. To her surprise, a thin sliver of golden light escaped from beneath the forbidden door. Someone was inside.
Isabella froze, pressing her back against the cool plaster of the wall, holding her breath. Soft, rhythmic scraping sounds drifted through the wood, accompanied by the low murmur of a voice speaking in hushed, urgent tones. She crept forward, inch by inch, until her shoulder brushed the heavy doorframe. Pressing her ear against the cool wood, she strained to catch the words.
"...can't keep him distracted forever," Eleanor’s voice whispered, venomous and sharp. "The girl saw too much today. If Julian digs any deeper into Clara’s financial records, we are finished. The whole estate will be frozen."
A second voice—deeper, raspy, belonging to someone Isabella had never heard before—replied from within the room. "Then get rid of the obstacle. You always were too attached to playing house."
"It's not playing house, Arthur," Eleanor hissed back. "It's preservation. Julian is blind, but he's not stupid. Once he finds the safe deposit key in that box, he'll piece together what happened to his precious wife."
Isabella’s hand flew to her mouth to stifle a gasp. The blood rushed in her ears, drowning out the rest of the conversation. Her mother hadn't just disappeared; Eleanor and this mysterious man named Arthur were involved. The realization hit her like a physical blow, making her knees weak. She backed away slowly, her eyes wide with terror, ready to turn and run down the stairs to find her father.
As she pivoted on her heel, her foot caught the edge of a loose floorboard. It gave a sharp, metallic creak under her weight.

Inside the room, the voices stopped instantly.
Panic surged through Isabella’s veins. She didn't think; she bolted down the hallway, her small bare feet pounding against the runner rug as she fled toward the safety of the lower floors. Behind her, the heavy door clicked open with a loud, ominous metallic snap, and rapid footsteps began to echo in pursuit.
