Chapter 12: The Confrontation in the Foyer

The digital upload completed with a soft chime just as the heavy iron security door at the entrance of the subterranean tunnel began to rattle violently. Someone was trying to force the hidden entrance from the main house.
"Move!" Julian commanded, wrapping one arm around Clara’s waist while holding Isabella’s hand firmly in the other.
They scrambled back through the limestone tunnel, navigating the dark stone steps until they burst out through the hidden wine rack into the service basement. Without hesitation, Julian led them up the concrete stairs toward the heavy metal service door. He slammed his shoulder against it, but it was locked securely from the outside.
"Stand back," Julian said, scanning the basement. He spotted a heavy iron crowbar leaning against the brick foundation wall. Seizing it, he jammed the wedge into the doorframe and leaned all his weight against the iron bar. With a loud, splintering crack, the deadbolt snapped, and the door swung open, flooding the basement with the pale, cold light of dawn.
They rushed out onto the rear lawn, gasping for the crisp morning air. But as they rounded the corner toward the main driveway, their path was blocked.
Arthur stood at the top of the white stone steps, holding a sleek black leather briefcase in one hand and a heavy brass fireplace poker in the other. Behind him, Eleanor stood with her arms crossed, her gold pantsuit looking slightly rumpled, her expression shifting from cold arrogance to absolute, petrified shock as she laid eyes on Clara walking across the lawn.
"Clara?" Eleanor gasped, taking a half-step backward as though seeing a ghost. "That's impossible. You were supposed to be locked away indefinitely."
"Your security is as sloppy as your ethics, Eleanor," Clara said, stepping forward past Julian, her voice ringing out with fierce, unbroken authority across the lawn. "The federal attorney general already has every single financial record, recording, and confession you and Arthur generated over the last year. It’s over."
Arthur’s face twisted into a mask of ugly desperation. He gripped the fireplace poker tighter, stepping down the marble steps with a menacing stride. "You think some digital files are going to save you out here in the middle of nowhere, Clara? Nobody is coming to help you!"

"You're wrong, Arthur," a deep, authoritative voice boomed from the tree line.
From the shadow of the tall green hedge path, three black SUVs crunched rapidly onto the gravel drive. Uniformed federal agents and private security specialists poured out of the vehicles, their jackets clearly marked with federal insignias, weapons drawn and aimed squarely at Arthur and Eleanor.
