Chapter 5: Flight Down the Grand Staircase

The footsteps behind Isabella were heavy, fast, and relentlessly close. She rounded the corner toward the grand staircase, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. The shadows of the banister rushed past in a blur as she threw herself down the first flight of stairs, her hand sliding desperately along the polished mahogany railing to keep her balance.

"Isabella! Stop right there!" Arthur’s raspy voice boomed from the upper landing, laced with a cold, menacing authority that froze her blood.

She didn't stop. She hit the landing, skidded on the Oriental runner, and scrambled down the final flight toward the massive marble foyer. As she reached the bottom, the front door’s heavy brass handle rattled. Before she could run toward the study, the side library door swung open, and Julian stepped out into the hallway, his shirt sleeves rolled up, a flashlight in his hand. He had been working late in his office, unwilling to sleep while the house held so many dark answers.

Julian caught Isabella as she collided with his chest, sobbing hysterically, unable to form coherent words. He wrapped his arms around her instantly, glaring up the stairs as Arthur appeared on the landing, adjusting the cuffs of a tailored charcoal suit with an unnerving, practiced calm.

"What is the meaning of this?" Julian demanded, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings as he pulled Isabella behind him, shielding her with his body.

Arthur offered a thin, unpleasant smile, descending the stairs at a leisurely pace. "Good evening, Julian. It appears our young guest was sleepwalking again. We merely woke up to check on her."

"Don't lie to me," Julian snarled, stepping forward, his fury palpable. "I know you're staying in the west wing without my permission, Arthur. I know what you and Eleanor are doing."

Eleanor appeared behind Arthur then, gliding down the stairs with her gold pantsuit immaculate, her expression a masterclass in feigned concern. "Julian, darling, you're letting your imagination run wild. The stress of Clara's absence has made you paranoid. Arthur is simply a financial consultant assisting me with the estate restructuring."

"Consultant?" Julian laughed bitterly, a harsh, humorless sound. "He's an embezzler with a criminal record in three states. Get out of my house, Arthur. Now."

Arthur stopped at the bottom of the stairs, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. He glanced at Eleanor, then back at Julian. "You really think you own this place, Julian? You think Clara signed those deeds over to you out of love? Wake up. Oakridge belongs to the foundation now. And we control the board."
