Chapter 7

Karen felt a cold knot form in her stomach. The raw adrenaline that had fueled her aggressive display the previous afternoon suddenly transformed into a heavy, suffocating dread. She remembered the loud, tearing sound of roots snapping, the shower of dark moist earth flying through the air, and the surprising lack of resistance as the heavy pine post gave way to her determined pull. If the post had been anchored into a reinforced concrete vault containing decades-old evidence, her brute strength shouldn't have been able to rip it out so easily unless the structure had already been compromised by shifting soil or previous moisture damage.

"When I pulled it out," Karen said hesitantly, her voice barely above a whisper, "the wood splintered at the base, but the whole thing came up in one piece. I didn't see any concrete vault. Just wet clay and thick oak roots."

Mark stepped out onto the porch, pulling the front door closed behind him and descending the wooden steps into the yard. He gestured for Karen to follow him toward the bare patch of earth where the mailbox had stood just twenty-four hours earlier. The evening dew was beginning to settle on the grass, making the dark circle of turned dirt glisten faintly under the amber glow of the porch light.

"That's because my grandfather didn't pour a massive block of surface concrete," Mark explained, crouching down beside the ragged hole. He pointed a flashlight beam directly into the damp cavity in the ground. "He used a standard galvanized steel lockbox encased inside a PVC pipe filled with quick-setting cement, buried three feet deep to bypass the frost line. When you yanked the post, the sheer torque snapped the PVC sleeve right at the coupling."

Karen knelt beside him on the damp grass, ignoring the potential stain to her black leggings as she peered into the hole. The beam of the flashlight illuminated the jagged edge of a grey plastic pipe protruding from the mud. Deep inside the broken pipe, the metallic glint of a weathered steel lockbox was clearly visible, canted at an awkward angle.

"Is it open?" Karen asked, her breath catching in her throat as she realized the implications. If the container's seal had broken during her violent extraction, whatever sensitive documents or evidence resided inside might have been exposed to moisture, air, or worse—tampering.

Mark reached down with gloved hands, carefully brushing away loose dirt from the rim of the fractured pipe. He didn't answer immediately, his face illuminated by the harsh white glare of the flashlight. With agonizing slowness, he slid his fingers down into the damp crevice, feeling around the edges of the metal box to test its structural integrity before attempting to pull it free from the earth entirely.
