Chapter 1

The afternoon sun beat down mercilessly on the manicured lawns of Oak Creek. Karen stood by the side of her beige SUV, chest heaving beneath her pink zip-up jacket, the splintered base of the wooden mailbox resting uncomfortably in her arms. Dirt stained her black leggings, a physical manifestation of months of simmering neighborhood frustration. Mark leaned against the hood of his sedan across the asphalt driveway, arms crossed tight over his grey t-shirt, his jaw clenched in quiet disbelief. A few yards away, Sheriff Miller licked the tip of his wooden pencil, scribbling notes onto his yellow legal pad with slow, deliberate strokes.
"I was just teaching him a lesson," Karen muttered defensively, her voice tight with lingering adrenaline. She shifted the weight of the rough-hewn pine post, wincing slightly as a loose splinter caught the fabric of her sleeve. "That post has been encroaching on my property line for three consecutive years. Every time I back my car out of the garage, I have to swing an extra five feet wide just to avoid clipping the base. I asked him politely in writing, I asked him verbally at the homeowners association meeting, and I even left notes taped to his front door."
Sheriff Miller looked up from his pad, his weathered face expressionless under the brim of his brown campaign hat. He glanced over at Mark, then back to Karen, evaluating the situation with the cautious eye of a veteran small-town law enforcement officer. "Property line disputes are civil matters, ma'am," the sheriff said evenly, his voice carrying the deep resonance of authority. "You can't just go ripping municipal or private fixtures out of the ground because you're having a boundary disagreement. That's destruction of property, plain and simple."

Mark stepped forward, uncrossing his arms and gesturing toward his front porch where a small security camera blinked a steady red light. "I’ve got the whole thing recorded in high definition, Sheriff. Audio, video, the whole nine yards. She marched right across my lawn like a soldier on a mission. Didn't even hesitate."
Karen glared at Mark, her face flushing a deep crimson. "Because you left me no choice, Mark! You ignored every single warning."
