Chapter 11

Back in Oak Creek, the afternoon storm had cleared, leaving the suburban streets slick and gleaming under a pale, watery sun. As Karen turned her SUV onto her street, she immediately noticed something was wrong. A black unmarked sedan was parked directly in front of Mark’s house, and two men in dark suits stood on his front porch, knocking firmly on the door with authoritative persistence.
Karen slowed her vehicle, pulling into her own driveway while keeping a watchful eye on the unfolding scene. She reached for her phone, dialing Mark’s number immediately. "Don't come out yet," she warned in a low, urgent whisper when he answered on the second ring. "You've got visitors. Two men in suits are at your front door."
"I see them on my security monitor," Mark replied calmly from inside his darkened living room. "They've been ringing the bell for five minutes. They aren't local police; they're private investigators working for the municipal legal defense fund managed by the town council."
"How could they possibly know about the box already?" Karen asked, her heart hammering against her ribs. "We just gave copies to Sarah Jenkins two hours ago."
"They didn't find out about the box," Mark realized with sudden clarity. "They found out about your trip to the municipal archives two days ago. Arthur, the elderly clerk, must have logged your inquiry about the nineteen-eighty-four plat maps and reported it to the town manager. They're here looking for the original survey markers and checking to see if we've uncovered the historic boundary discrepancies."
The danger was escalating faster than either of them had anticipated. The corrupt network controlling Oak Creek wasn't just a historical relic; it was an active, paranoid machine designed to protect its illicit legacy at all costs. If the men in suits suspected that Mark and Karen were digging into past property lines to expose the embezzlement scheme, their homes, their privacy, and potentially their personal safety were in immediate jeopardy.

Across the asphalt, one of the men in suits turned away from Mark's front door, scanning the street with a cold, calculating gaze before letting his eyes linger on Karen sitting inside her beige SUV. He began walking slowly down the wooden steps, stepping off the curb and heading directly across the asphalt toward her driveway with deliberate, intimidating strides.
Karen's hand tightened on the steering wheel, her instincts screaming at her to put the car in reverse and drive away. But running away would only confirm their guilt and invite immediate suspicion. Taking a steadying breath, she pushed the door handle, stepped out of the vehicle to meet the investigator head-on, and prepared to defend her ground once again.
