Chapter 10

The following afternoon, parked two towns over in the secluded gravel lot of a roadside diner, Karen and Mark waited inside her beige SUV for the journalist to arrive. The rain had begun to fall in a steady, grey drizzle, washing against the windshield in rhythmic waves. On the passenger seat between them sat the weathered steel lockbox, wrapped securely in a nondescript brown canvas duffel bag to avoid drawing unwanted attention.

A sleek black sedan pulled into the adjacent parking space, and a woman in a sharp trench coat stepped out, holding a black umbrella against the rain. She walked briskly to Karen’s passenger-side window and tapped twice on the glass. Karen unlocked the doors, and Sarah Jenkins slid quickly into the back seat, shaking the raindrops from her coat before introducing herself with a sharp, professional handshake.

"You said you had original documentation regarding the nineteen-eighty-six Oak Creek development embezzlement scandal," Sarah said without preamble, her sharp eyes scanning both Karen and Mark with practiced scrutiny. "That's a cold trail that hasn't seen daylight in nearly forty years. What makes you think you have anything the state hasn't already investigated and dismissed?"

Mark unzipped the duffel bag, lifted the heavy steel lockbox onto his lap, and popped the lid using the antique brass key. He pulled out the handwritten blue ledger and the certified bank statements, handing them forward to the journalist. "My grandfather was the internal auditor who compiled the duplicates before his car was run off the road by county officials. We just dug it up from beneath a disputed property line on my front lawn."

Sarah took the ledger, slipping on a pair of white cotton inspection gloves before opening the weathered pages. As her eyes scanned the typewritten entries, financial routing codes, and signatures of prominent local officials, her professional skepticism instantly dissolved into intense, focused concentration. She pulled a small digital tablet from her briefcase, photographing several key pages with rapid, silent precision.

"This isn't just a local scandal," Sarah murmured, her voice laced with suppressed excitement. "These routing numbers connect directly to state-level infrastructure grants that were funneled into private shell corporations during the initial construction of Oak Creek. This is federal wire fraud and systemic public corruption. If these signatures authenticate, half the current municipal board and several prominent state legislators are going to be facing federal indictment."

Karen exhaled a breath she didn't realize she’d been holding, glancing sideways at Mark. The realization that their quiet suburban feud had accidentally exposed a massive criminal enterprise felt surreal, almost cinematic. Yet the immediate danger was entirely real; once the people implicated realized the evidence had surfaced, the fallout in Oak Creek would be swift and unforgiving.

"What are our next steps?" Mark asked, his voice steady as he secured the lockbox lid. "We need protection and a legally binding chain of custody before anyone in town realizes the box is gone from my yard."
