Chapter 6: The Standoff in the Yard

The sudden burst of crimson and azure light painted the dilapidated walls of the logging depot in violent, pulsating strokes. Sarah Lin stepped out of her cruiser with practiced precision, her service pistol drawn and held in a steady two-handed weaver stance. Behind the open driver's side door for cover, her voice cut through the idling engine noise with cold, absolute authority. Federal and internal affairs! Shut off your engine and step out of the vehicle with your hands visible where I can see them! The enforcer standing near the SUV froze mid-stride, his silhouette stark against the blinding glare of the cruiser's headlights. For a tense second, no one moved; the yard held its breath as two opposing worlds of the law collided in the dirt. The enforcer lowered his head slightly, his hand hovering near his hip where a concealed firearm rested beneath a dark jacket. I’m Detective Miller’s detail, the man called back, his voice thick with arrogant assurance as he tried to talk his way out of the trap. You’re stepping out of your jurisdiction, Lin. Stand down and let us handle the runaway. Sarah didn't drop her weapon an inch. Miller doesn't have jurisdiction out here, and neither do you. Turn around and place your hands on the hood of your SUV right now, or I will open fire. From the shadows of the nearby sedan, Jason pushed his door open slowly, ensuring his movements were deliberate and visible. He gently helped Rachel out of the car, keeping her shielded behind his body as he navigated the uneven terrain toward Sarah's position. The enforcer sneer was visible even in the erratic strobe light, realizing too late that Sarah had anticipated this exact play and cornered them without backup from the main precinct. He made a subtle twitch toward his hip, but before his fingers could close around his weapon, a second set of headlights swept into the yard from the rear access road. Two black SUVs bearing federal insignia swarmed the perimeter, their doors flying open to reveal agents in tactical gear with heavy ballistic shields. The game was up; the enforcer slowly raised his hands in the air, his defiance crumbling as the heavy boots of federal marshals surrounded him from all sides.
