Chapter 11: The Return to the City

The armored federal transport vehicle navigated the city streets under the grey shroud of an afternoon drizzle, bringing Jason, Sarah, and Rachel back into the urban center they had fled days ago. The atmosphere inside the vehicle was quiet and focused. The grand jury hearing was scheduled for the following morning at the federal courthouse downtown, a heavily fortified building surrounded by media vans and camera crews broadcasting live updates. Jason held Rachel's hand, feeling her fingers tighten around his as the vehicle passed familiar street corners that once felt hostile and threatening, but now felt like territory reclaimed. They were escorted directly through a secure underground garage into the holding facility of the federal building, bypassing the media frenzy entirely. Inside the secure suite provided for witnesses, the accommodations were clean and comfortable, designed to reduce stress before the testimony. Sarah checked her tablet, coordinating with the lead federal prosecutor who was finalizing the witness order. Everything is set for nine o'clock tomorrow, Sarah announced, entering the room with a stack of final review documents. The defense attorneys for the former Chief are attempting to file motions to suppress the digital evidence on procedural technicalities, but the judge has already signaled they will be thrown out. They're grasping at straws because they know the paper trail is airtight, Jason replied, reviewing his deposition notes with meticulous care. We just need to stick to the facts, speak clearly, and let the evidence speak for itself. Rachel looked up from a puzzle she was working on at the table. Will I have to talk to the scary men in the courtroom? she asked, her voice dipping slightly in apprehension. Only to the judge and the jury, sweetheart, Jason answered gently, resting a hand on her shoulder. And I will be right there with you the entire time. You won't be alone for a single second. Sarah offered an encouraging nod, reinforcing the safety net they had built around the young girl. The journey from terror to justice was reaching its final ascent, and every step they took brought them closer to absolute closure.
