Chapter 5: Shadows of the Depot

The rusted iron gates of the abandoned logging depot hung half-open like the broken jaw of a forgotten industrial beast, welcoming the fleeing sedan into its desolate embrace. Jason swung the steering wheel hard, sending the vehicle skidding across a courtyard littered with rotting timber, broken pallets, and overgrown weeds. He cut the engine immediately, plunging the car into sudden darkness and killing the headlights to blend into the Stygian shadows cast by the towering tin-roofed warehouses. The silence that followed was heavy, punctuated only by the rapid ticking of the cooling exhaust pipe and the shallow, controlled breaths of the two occupants. Stay down, Rachel, Jason whispered, reaching across to gently press her head below the level of the dashboard. The young girl nodded wordlessly, her eyes wide with a mixture of exhaustion and unyielding courage. A minute later, the low, throbbing rumble of a powerful V8 engine echoed against the dilapidated structures, signaling the arrival of the pursuing SUV. The vehicle rolled past the open gates slowly, its high-beam headlights sweeping across the overgrown yard in great, searching arcs that painted pale bars of light across the rusted corrugated metal walls. Jason held his breath, his hand resting reassuringly on Rachel’s shoulder while his eyes tracked the movement of the enemy vehicle through the windshield. The SUV stopped near the center of the yard, its engine idling with a menacing purr. The driver's side door clicked open, and a heavy boot crunched down onto the loose gravel. Footsteps approached cautiously, the deliberate pace of a trained hunter sniffing out trapped prey. Jason reached inside his jacket, his fingers wrapping around the grip of his service weapon—a legal carry he had maintained despite the department's attempts to strip him of his credentials. He hoped he wouldn't have to use it, but he knew the men hunting them did not negotiate or take prisoners when institutional secrets were on the line. Suddenly, the sharp, authoritative flash of blue and red emergency strobes cut through the darkness near the depot entrance, followed by the screech of tires as Sarah’s unmarked cruiser roared into the courtyard, blocking the exit and pinning the enforcer’s vehicle in a tactical crossfire.
